What do you do, if your DS despite all efforts, takes all finger food, looks at you in the eye whilst picking it up and purposefully throws it on the floor - still looking you in the eye.

And then, when trying to offer other foods - on a spoon or otherwise - turns his face sideways on and just peeks at you out of the corner of his eye?

Er...laugh?

Sorry, not helpful I know.

SorenLorensen · 02/02/2006 23:28

I know....

cry.

Ebay?

Seriously, ignore him. Put the food out, let him do what he likes with it, then take it away again when you've finished.

How old is he now? DS1 didn't get "hungry" till 8 or 9m. Now some days I worry we'll not be able to afford to feed him...

Oh, and I don't mean "ignore him" at mealtimes - I just mean ignore his behaviour with food - chat to him about anything but.

He's coming up 10 months now.

He's barely eaten at all this week. He picked up a biscuit that DD had dropped on the floor yesterday and started chewing on that until we saw him and he dropped it like he hadnt been touching IYSWIM.

Starting eyeing up a banana earlier too until i looked up at him.

So give him absolutely nothing else to eat? Just b/feed? (hasnt been doing much of that either this week - although has had an upset stomach)

Hmm...are you sure he's not nipping downstairs and raiding the fridge in the night? Sounds like he's a secret lemonade drinker

How do you normally feed him and what will he eat? Do you eat at the same time? Does he eat with DD? How is DD about eating? Does he have a favourite food?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/02/2006 00:05

His diet largely consists of spoon fed jar food unfortunately. I normally sneak in some fresh home cooked stuff from under the table as i feed him (into the jar and mix until its largely just homecooked stuff) He doesnt buy homecooked put straight into a jar.

His taste is limited. Every time i think he has a favourite food - he suddenly starts to refuse it. I cant believe a 9mth old can be so fussy in this way.

Just a thought but I find my LO eats more if we eat together, especially if I start eating first!

LeahE · 03/02/2006 09:15

Have you tried giving him sips of water between mouthfuls? I find my DS will often refuse food if he's thirsty but then eat it happily after a drink of water (but then he might just be weird).

mummytosteven · 03/02/2006 09:17

Just keep offering. Eventually (could be months on, unfortunately!) he'll start eating a more varied range. Is he recovering from a tummy bug atm IIRC?

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2006 09:27

It sounds like he knows you want him to eat, and is finding defying you interesting.

I'd reduce the jar food, or fake jar food, and ignore him while he eats. Well, stick around, I guess, because of choking risk, but do your best to be completely uninterested. Do cooking, sort out dishes, read a book, whatever.

Alternatively, you could follow the "throw food on the floor and you're done" rule.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/02/2006 10:20

He wont drink water Leah or even ebm from a cup.

We regularly sit down to eat (although DP works shifts one week in two so always with us two) but ALWAYS with his sister.

I often leave food and get up to do washing up - he just sits there and stares at me.

He has had an upset stomach this week MTS but this has been going on for nearly 4 months now. Just when i think i have made progress he changes. Being ill this week has taken us, quite literally, back to square one.

I have spoken to my HV this morning. They want to weigh him at next clinic on Tuesday (mentioned vitamin supplements if his diet is mostly b/milk). Then they will see about sending a nursery nurse to visit us at home to see how he behaves.

ANyone had this before?
