Snack and naps

A few weeks ago DS1 (10.5 months) lost some weight...the hv advised me to make sure he's having more pudding, and also a mid-morning snack. I'd dropped his 11am BF but not replaced it with anything else. (he has BF 6.30am, 3pm and bedtime)

It worked well and he still ate lunch an hour or so later. But now he's suddenly having longer naps around about 10am-11.45am, which is amazing because he barely ever slept longer than 30 minutes! However it means I can't really fit in a snack, and just give him an early lunch instead.

Does that sound OK or is he going to miss out by missing his morning snack? Do people think it's better to give him a snack at 11.45 and a later lunch?

I know it sounds a bit trivial but because he lost 3 oz last month I'm a bit anxious about his food...

sounds fine to give him his lunch when he wakes - if he was hungry for his snack then he wouldnt stay asleep.

You could try both with or without snack over a few days and see which one works better? I think I would do bf, breakfast one hour later, then mid-morning snack (maybe about 9.30), nap and then a late lunch, so just let him have his nap in between his morning snack and lunch. Your DS might have other ideas though...

Niot sure how many centiles 3oz means, maybe it is a blip and he will start putting on weight soon? Was he ill, ot off his food for any other reasons? Is he otherwise well? DS can sometimes be off his food for a few days and then makes up for it.

Also, IMO rather than giving him more pudding, I would add cream or cream cheese to his food, and give him calorific food such as avocado.

Looby 3oz doesn't sound like an awful lot. Was he weighed naked both times and on the same scales by the same person? Have the scales been calibrated recently?

If he is loosing weight though I would ignore your HVs advice and up the bfs not decrease them. At this age the milk is far more important and there is little food that you can give that will be as calorific as the bm.

Is there a Bfing Support Group you could go to where you could discuss his weight and feeding? If not, give the National Breastfeeding Helpline a call.

Have you thought about posting on the Breast & Bottle Feeding Section too? There are some Breastfeeding Counsellors on the board who may be able to advise on the weight loss Smile.
