EBF, weaning and water?

DS is 6mo and has been on solids for about two weeks now. He's having a bit of baby rice and purée/ mashed up veg and fruit - twice as day. He probably has a few spoonfuls at each feed. We're otherwise breastfeeding as normal (day and night time feeds).

Should I be giving him a bit of water to sip at mealtimes or is the milk enough for fluids. I should ask the Hv but don't need to go back to baby clinic for fortnight and just wanted to check.

When I weaned ds he was also ebfed and I wondered too. I did give him tiny sips- we used the Avent cup with valve but of course he didn't know to suck so I took the valve out and just tipped it up a tiny but. It worked really well. I kind of thought the bm should be enough but as he was my first I was worried (because I had no idea) about constipation and would rather he had a tiny bit of water than ended up bunged up. It also meant that he expected water with every meal and so when it came to progressing on to more substantial meals later when he would definitely need water he was already used to it.

You could give a small amount of water in a lidded cup - we used the tommee tippee first cup with a flip up spout. It is a free flowing cup so no valve.

Marking place as was wondering the same thing. Is there a limit to how much they should be given?

DS (now 10 months) was also EBF and weaned around 6mo. We offered him water in a sippy cup (tommy tippee) with all mealtimes, not really for fluid intake so much but to get him used to drinking water. For the first month he wasn't really into it, he'd spit it out most of the time (or just let it fall out of his mouth, very funny to observe), but then he started drinking it a bit and now actually likes it. Which is great, because he's now on 3 meals a day and has dropped a few of his milk feeds, so really needs the water to keep hydrated.

I'd say at the 6 months point it's just good to offer so you create a good habit. If you're worried about it filling DS up, just offer one or two sips per meal.

We introduced the Tommee Tippee cup to DS at about 10 months. He is now 13 months, still breast-fed, and throughout the day will get his cup, open it and have a drink as and when he wants water. If he wants milk he opens my top instead of the cup. :)

I introduced a free flow Tommee Tippee cup with water at 6 months alongside food. Has taken my DD until just before 12 months to fully get the hang of tipping it up to drink herself. I also gave water in a bottle and in a doidy cup.
