Weaning and windypops!

DS is 6 months exactly - started weaning a couple of weeks ago cos he's a big chumper and kept trying to eat my food. We're BLW, not necessarily by choice - he won't let me feed him, HOWEVER... he's parping, straining, screaming and grunting like a trouper most days since we started.

I can't pin it down on any one thing he's eaten, but for example today, he's absolutely doubled up with a sore tum, and quite miserable. I always make sure he has fruit/veg with every session (I won't call them 'meals' yet as they're not regular or scheduled, just playing), sips of water, and he's still having as many breastfeeds as ever - a LOT - he loves the boob! Doesn't seem constipated - nappy contents are as fluid as ever, just in a delightful rainbow of new colours!

Is this normal early weaning behaviour? I guess his gut just has a lot of new stuff to deal with. I've kept things quite bland so far, crumpets or toast with hummus or cream cheese, avocado, yogurt, sticks of root veg, pears etc but feel really sorry for him and his bowels! Any advice, other than to take it back to basics and see what disagrees with him?

How many times a day are you offering solids Mombo? It could just simply be that his bowels are yet able to cope with solids and it may be better to reduce solids to once per day or just carry on bfing only for a couple of weeks and then try introducing them again.

Sorry no advice but just had to say... You call them windypops too ha ha!

I read the term in a book years ago and think its so much nicer than saying farts when it comes to my DD Grin

Actually, IRT your query, it just struck me that my DD has started weaning since last week at exactly 5 and a half months too and is crying over tummy aches (only sussed it was that yesterday). I think is this more to do with trapped gas than anything else. She never had a single problem with gas or colic and I haven't even had to properly burp her before as she just burps by herself straight after feeding, but that seems to have changed now she is eating solids.

Your DS is eating the same stuff as my DD minus bread and dairy, though she grabbed my pizza crust off my plate for a chomp last night so I will probably start giving her a little bread too.

Sounds exactly the same and pretty normal then in my limited experience. Actually glad to know its not just my DD and what I am feeding her.

I am also still breastfeeding and I give her about a tablespoon (no more as I thought breastmilk provided enough fluid) of water straight after her meal to wash it down but my family members have advised giving her more gradually over the evening till her bedtime. Not too much though, just as much as she seems to need for her little tummy.

Oh and she only has one meal of solids a day.

LD if you want to offer her water, a sippy cup is fine with meals. There is no need to offer her water during the evening, bfs are fine.

LDNmummy · 22/03/2012 16:31

Thanks Jilted, I thought as much. They just gave me that advice as I have been giving her water from a baby bottle so far and she doesn't like it so I am having to encourage her to drink it in small sips.

I am getting a sippy cup today actually. I am hoping that if she uses a sippy cup the independence of it will encourage her to enjoy the water itself a little more.

Thanks for replying chaps! I thought this post had fallen into the void.
DS has 2 'meals' a day, breakfast and mid-afternoon lunch-ish. I'm waiting until the clocks change to introduce evening food, as he's currently asleep by 6pm every night and I don't want any windy thrashings that close to bedtime!

That said, I think he's getting very used to food now. He has good slugs of water from a sippy cup (which he LOVES) while he's eating and always always something like plum or pear to keep things moving! The windypops (and yes, it's a great word!) are still forthcoming and stinky, but a lot easier on him by the looks of things!
