babies and bio yoghurts

Hi I'm weaning 7 mo DS. I want to give some plain yoghurt with his fruit.
All official advice is that you mustn't give babies the bio-live yoghurts as it is bad for their gut. But you try and find a plain yoghurt without bio-live cultures these days!
And surely all yoghurt is made with some sort of bacteria culture, so wouldn't that mean all yog necessarily has this as an essential ingredient?
Most confused and trying to sort out an internet shop!!

I'm inclined to get Yeo Valley Organic Natural Greek Style Natural Yogurt, described as "Proper organic bio live yeogurt", contains the following live cultures: Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus Bulgaricus, Streptococcus Thermophilus.

That sound ok????

I'm sure I didn't notice this when I weaned. I waited a bit for dairy as we have allergies in family (stupid as DS was FF so obviously OK with it); perhaps 10 months? But definitely gave DS organic natural yog with my purée. He's 2.1 now with no obvious problems... but when do these gut problems manifest?

Perhaps talk to HV again. It may just mean the yogs like Activia.

Sounds a bit lentil weavy but I sometimes make my own yogurt - starting with a small pot of Yeo Valley organic full fat (live, I suppose, but isn't it all) and 2 pints of blue top. Plus 3tbsps of milk powder to add extra protein and thicken it up. I'm not sure if it's actually cheaper than a great big pot of made stuff but in the glass jars, it lasts for ages - I always seemed to be throwing away half eaten mouldy pots before I started doing this.

Got this one from Amazon but it's cheaper at John Lewis

Erm? Where do you get the advice to avoid bio yogurts, I've never seen it? And there's research which shows quite the opposite, the "good bacteria" help the required colonization of the gut that babies need to do. See here or here or indeed many other studies.

DD has only ever had the same yogurts we eat, which tend to be natural live bio yogurts, I can't see any reason to avoid.

bio yoghurt is ok from 6 months unless it says specifically otherwise on the tub.

Thanks guys.

Shock at Dizzy making own yoghurt, not sure how you get time to go on MN in between that and all the lentil weaving!!!

My wee girls been having the Yeo Valley since 6 months and loves it. Started buying the small pots but now just get the big ones and dish it out as she gets through so much of it. Dizzy - might just try making my own too, my mum used to when I was little and it was amazing, especially with a little brown sugar sprinlked on top!

hi, does anyone know if its safe to feed my 28week old strawberry activia fat free yoghurt? I know it's best to feed full fat but I just mean as a one off tonight as I've run out of any other desserts until my shopping arrives in the morning xx thanks

NuzzleandScratch · 16/01/2013 19:26

Bio yoghurt is plain yoghurt, they just add these names as marketing. Obviously I don't mean the little active culture drinks. Anyway, you can get a Yeo Valley one, in little pots or a giant pot to serve from. Sainsbury also do an own brand plain yoghurt.

As a one off be fine. :) artificial sweeteners aren't great for them but doubt one night would hurt
