My ds3 is 20 weeks old and exclusively bf. I had to go to the docs y'day with a severe migraine and was prescribed a drug which does not allow you to feed for four hours after taking it. The gp then said "he's on solids now? So it shouldn't be a problem for him to go four hours?" When I replied he wasn't she asked why and said the advice was now back to four months again so I could start him right away as he would be hungry. (Should have said I live in Australia). I checked the WHO website but it still seems to advise six mths ebf. Now I'm confused! He does bf a LOT and regularly and also has reflux. He does seem agitated when the family are having meals as he is just sat in his high chair watching (poor thing), but I'm just not sure what to do. Any advice much appreciated. Thanks

In uk, advice is still 6 months. However, I think most people try to take cues from their baby. In my ante natal class we started weaning in a range. The earliest was four months and the rest of us slotted in up to six months. We weaned ds at 22 weeks. He was desperate for food and has both reflux and constipation so we hoped it would help. It helped with the co antipasti on immediately which was great and ds loved it. But because we started early we went v slow and didn't give him anything except baby rice, fruit and veg until 26 weeks. I know peole though whose babies refused food until well after 6 months.

Do what you feel your baby needs as long as he is over 4 months.

Even in australia advice is six months. GP talking rubbish. Just wait it out with the breastmilk you'll be fine. Also maybe contact Australian Breastfeeding association on 1800 686 268 to ask about the medication. 4 hours is quite a long time

Thank you for your replies. I'm comfortable with the advice re four hours as my gp rang Mothersafe in Sydney while I was in her office. They are the drugs and medication in pg and lactation specialists. I only had to have one dose of the meds this time so distraction was the way to go and just manged the four hours. He can easily go three so another hour wasn't too much. My eldest is eight and was weaned at 16wks (the advice at the time), however my 6yr old was weaned at 26 weeks as the advice had changed! My 8yr old is a much better eater and my 6yr old has digestion and gastrointestinal problems! However I do want to wait as long as possible (even though ds3 has started trying to accost my food!!) but believe that if I do wean in the next 2-4 weeks it will be what is best for my lo at the time. Just wish gps were up to speed, as it is confusing (even 3rd time round) to get conflicting advice.
