Real butter (yum) or marg (yak)?

I've always brought real butter for my toast and cooking and because I LOVE it spread thickly on crumpets but now dd (nearly 7 months) is being BLW'ed do I need to change?

I'm thinking salt content of it as I buy salted not unsalted as that tastes fowl too My dd is a toast lover already so I'm just spreading it thinly. Is this ok? Or should I buy a small tub of marg for dd?

Any suggestions?

Real butter, cos the fat is good for them at that age Smile

Buy unsalted butter - if the worst comes to the worst you can always add salt to your own food later.

Seona1973 · 03/03/2012 16:53

we just used the slightly salted butter we already bought. Marg is not nice so I wouldnt buy it.

I'm working on the "real food where possible" principle. So butter, rather than marge but please ignore the breadsticks and dairylea. Can you keep unsalted in the fridge for dd in the same way we usually have semi skimmed milk but ds has whole?

SecretNutellaFix · 03/03/2012 18:45

buy unsalted for her.

I could be wrong here, but I thought margarine also had salt in it?

yep, get some unsalted butter.

Dilligaf81 · 03/03/2012 21:17

Unsalted butter is yuk though isnt it -
I did try to do the unsalted with the DC'S recently (7,5,4,1) the older 3 refused to eat their toast and said it tasted off, the baby just threw it on the floor after 1 bite (pick your battles and all that)

overmydeadbody · 03/03/2012 21:26

Real butter of course.

Why would you want to give your child disgusting processed sh*t full of chemicals as well as salt?!

Go for unsalted if you are really worried and planning on covering everything your baby eats with huge slabs of butter, or if you planning on thinly spreading it, just use normal butter. Or slightly salted. But never ever the processed crap that is margarine.

When DS was weaning I think I mostly just left out butter from his diet, simply because I didn't buy or use it myself except for in baking (didn't use marg either) and he didn't know any different. It's only recently that he has started having and enjoying butter on his toast, he used to prefer it with just jam or honey. He still, like me, doesn't like it in sandwiches, but likes it melted on hot things.

Please stay away from the vileness that is marg and spreads, if only to preserve your child's taste buds.

butter
we went for unsalted when the dds were really tiny, although i sometimes found myself sprinkling a little salt on my buttered crumpets Blush. dd2 is a little bigger now, but i still keep unsalted butter in the fridge to cook with, and then salt DH and my dinners at the table.

GodisaDj · 03/03/2012 21:46

Cheers lovely MNers Smile think I'll try the 'slightly' salted version

I'm not massively worried with what i use now, it just occurred to me today that it is salted. I love my salt and I've stopped cooking with it (adding after) and don't tend to use butter for cooking as such, just toast. So think it'll be ok. She doesn't have toast every day as alternate breakfasts etc.

gillygaf your post made me lol! I think dd will do this as I spread it fairly thinly this morning and she turned her nose up (think she likes to suck the butter out!)
