cereal for 10mo

My 10 month old has been eating Cow and Gate baby cereal for 7m+. Now the box is nearly finished I am wondering what to move on to. Can she eat 'grown-up cereal' rather than stuff specifically made for babies? Do grown-up cereals have too much sugar and salt in? Can you recommend one? DH and I don't really eat cereal much. She has tried readybrek after DH bought it for himself, but she doesn't like it.

We gave DS weetabix and readybrek from 6months. We used cows milk which is ok when used in cooking, but not too much so it was fairly thick consistency. I also found that mixing a bit of pureed apple/pear/banana or crushed up blueberries in the readybrek made it a bit sweeter and more tasty for him.

I gave my DS oatibix flakes, a lot lower in salt than most, let the flakes soak in the milk for a bit and they'll be nice and soft.

I would be very careful about added sugar and salt (esp salt) at that age. You can choose adult cereals that have no added salt or sugar - for example shredded wheat (comes in bitesize version too). Dove's farm makes a type of weetabix that is organic and has no added salt or sugar either, and you can also find adult cereal on Ocado/health food shops with no added sugar/salt. Try adding yoghurt or fruit/fruit puree, raisins, etc., to make the taste more interesting.

My DS has had shredded wheat, porridge and weetabix from 6 mo with full fat cows milk and a blob of plain yogurt. I agree with checking the salt and sugar content though. He has never had any 'specifically made for babies' food, I think if you watch what you buy then there is no need for these which are mostly a marketing ploy.

Own brand cereals are usually lower in sugar and salt. DS was eating rice krispies, bit size shredded wheat, porridge and weetabix from 6 months. I often mixed yogurt in with it to make it easier for him to pick up with spoon or fingers.

My DS (10mo) looooooves bite size shredded wheat as he can stuff them in himself. But other options we use are cheerios, shreddies and bitesize wheatabix. Tend to stick to own brand cereals as they are lower in salt and suger than the real deal.

As long as your DD is not eating cheerios 3 times a day then dont worry too much about the salt content in some of the cereals.

You'll save a fortune too Grin
