When can I give raisins?

DD2 is 9 months old, and I can't remember if it's safe to give raisins yet or if they're a choking hazard. She has 3 and a half teeth and can chew lumps, toast etc.

I want to expand her snack repertoire...

I think you can start her with a few now.

Just keep an eye. Some babies "choke" more often than others. I think the DTs had them around the 10 month mark.... or was it 12? Time flies and so much is forgotten as we move to the next stage.

Anyway, this'll bump it up and lots of people will be shocked that I would say it was okay lol and then you and I will know for sure.

yes it be fine... just be aware thats all

I give raisin sized pieces of dried apricot to DD (7.5m), and she chews really really well (no teeth though), so I guess I can now give raisins?! She also has peas (I tear them a bit so they fall apart in her mouth, if you see what I mean - so she doesn't have to bite through the skin). I'm feeling a bit bad that I may have done this too early though?!

fannylover · 27/01/2006 18:27

yeah it'll be fine! ds has been having then since around 9 months and loves them

CarolinaMoon · 27/01/2006 18:32

it never occurred to me not to, tbh. Why are raisins more of a choking hazard than any other bit of food?

jasper · 27/01/2006 23:34

just don't give them too often - they rot teeth

Aloha · 28/01/2006 00:12

Warning: they reappear in the nappy exactly as they went in, only slightly more moist...

Meanoldmummy · 28/01/2006 00:26

ALOHA get your ass back on the gay thread.....

Seona1973 · 28/01/2006 13:52

the first time I gave dd a raisen she chewed it for about 15 minutes and it got spat back out about 3 times the size it started off at!!

sansouci · 28/01/2006 13:54

make sure she's sitting down when she eats them & watch her like a hawk.

Melpomene · 28/01/2006 17:44

Thanks for your thoughts.

I gave her a little bowl of raisins this afternoon and she just shovelled them into her mouth - she got through the whole bowl very quickly.

Looking forward to the raisin-nappies now
