How important is cooking with full fat milk?

We always buy semi skimmed but now dd (6.5months) is BLW do I have to switch to full fat to cook with?

For example, have just made a cauliflower cheese and made cheesy white sauce from scratch with semi skimmed milk. Can it actually harm her or is just about calorie content?

I thought it was just to do with babies & toddlers needing more fat in their diets than adults.

I don't think it's harmful.

I am in no way qualified to answer, but I'll tell you what I did/do Grin

From 6 months to a year (when they can also have cows milk to drink), I used formula or semi skimmed in the cooking (dependant on whether it was just for babies or for the whole family). The amounts used in cooking are fairly small, and your baby is still going to get most of her nutrition from breastmilk.

Once they passed a year and can have cows milk to drink, I started buying full fat milk for them to have in a sippy cup with meals/snacks so I use that in the cooking too (whether for just babies or whole family). My two still get a lot of breastmilk, but I wanted to encourage milk from a cup too, for the times I am not there.

Having said all that, I really don't think semi skimmed milk or low fat yogurt is going to hurt them, it is just about the important fats being missing. So the odd portion of porrige made with semi skimmed isn't going to hurt anyone Grin

Thank you for quick responses misslinnet and happyasASandboy - she's trying cauliflower cheese tonight then Grin

She had a bit of weetabix and banana with a little bit of milk this morning and I very nearly expressed milk in to it but couldn't be arsed to then resterslise pump! With being so young and doing BLW it's not as if shes taking lots in yet. Might start buying a small pint of full fat as that will last a week won't it.

Thanks again Smile

If she drinks full fat milk and pits it on cereal I can't see the small decrease in fat from cooked food would make any difference at all.

DD2 is a perfectly fit and healthy 11 year old who has never drunk a glass of cows milk in her life. She hates it.

From about 8 she's drunk hot chocolate and milk shake, but plain milk never.
She was EBF, never took a bottle or cup of formulae either.
She does, however love yoghurt, cooked cheese and ice cream, especially ice creamBlush
