Ds is 27 weeks and eating three good meals per day. I've been using organic baby oats in the morning, (Its really expensive and doesn't last very long. When and what other cereals are good to give?

ready brek
weetabix (but does have a little salt and sugar in)

NotQuiteCockney · 24/01/2006 19:12

Your local health food store will have regular fine-milled organic oats, which are the same as baby oats, I bet, and a lot cheaper.

serenity · 24/01/2006 19:13

weetabix, or own brand version - you can use formula or cows milk (formula is sweeter). It's best done with warm milk though as then it goes all mushy, just start off with lots of milk, and gradually reduce the amount you use to increase the 'solidity'. Beautiful weaning food!

Thanks everyone am a bit of a newbie at this weaning thing...
Know anabelle carmel says its ok, but then she says sweeten yogurt with honey at this stage and I'm sure thats wrong.

also regular porridge oats...

at honey though!!!!! even the label on the honey says not for babies under 1!!!!

If DS turns his nose up at Readybrek etc, you could try mixing just a small spoonful of the organic baby oats in with bigger spoonfuls of readybrek/weetabix and then use less and less of the baby stuff until eventually he's just eating completely normal cereal. We were very lucky and both of ours took to 'normal' breakfasts straight away but I know my friend used this gradual method and it worked well.

I gave DD (10 months) Annabelle Carmel's Three Bears breakfast this morning which is normal porridge oats with chopped apricots and raisins. The bowl was completely emptied! I had some too and it was delicious. Now I just need to get 4 year old DS to eat it!

mumfor1sttime · 24/01/2006 19:34

Ds loves his weetabix, he gets really excited about eating it in the mornings, and cries if he has to wait too long at the table!

I started feeding him weetabix from around 6 months, made it quite milky with formula to start with.
He used to have ready brek, but he isnt as keen.

He is now 12 months and has 2 weetabix mixed with cows milk and a banana cut into pieces which he eats himself.

I tried the 'baby' cereals but he didnt seem to like them and I found them expensive and hard to mix up to a suitable thickness.

serenity · 24/01/2006 19:37

I couldn't buy the baby cereals as I'd end up eating them myself, and they're not cheap when eaten in adult portions

My DS used to love hot shreddies. They go all mushy and gooey so great for this age.

chapsmum · 24/01/2006 20:11

Wow furball! I will try that too. Hmmm...hot shreddies...

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 24/01/2006 20:20

own brand versions of wheetabix tend to have slightly less salt and sugar in I've discovered. DS's both loved it mushed up with warm milk.

These days I just put them in the bowl (they're 5 and 2 and have 2 'wheatbiscuits' each for breakfast) pour some milk over and bung 'em in the microwave - they love it.

Lacrimosa · 24/01/2006 20:23

should a baby under 9 months have wheat? I genuinly dont know my son is allergic so I'm not sure but I thought I read not to give? does anyone know? was it just my situation?

mummytosteven · 24/01/2006 20:25

lacrimosa - I think that you only need to avoid gluten (inc. wheat) up to 6 months.

Lacrimosa · 24/01/2006 20:26

Thankyou for that I did the same for dd as for ds so I dont know all the usual ages for things, thanx

Squarer · 24/01/2006 21:03

What is really nice (DS considers himself lucky if he gets a look in ...) is apple sauce mixed into porridge/weetabix. I made a load at the end of the season form our windfalls and froze them into icecube portions. Mmmmm....

Melpomene · 24/01/2006 21:24

I give dd2 porridge with prune puree in it. Also Ready Brek, and Familia Baby Muesli is very good although a bit expensive.

I also sometimes give her couscous with chopped up raisins, dried apricots, cinnamon and creamed coconut.

Ironmaiden · 26/01/2006 14:05

I'm also gonna fly the weetabix flag, 1 portion is just the right size and it keeps constipation away! Also Heinz oat and apple box goes down well.
Definately gonna try hot shreddies tommorrow tho!

what is hot shreddies? shreddies mixed with milk and bunged into microwave? or hot milk mixed with shreddies?

with weetabix, my ds1 likes it mixed with youghurt and milk!
