When did your blw baby start eating a proper amount?

Dd is 8 mo, we have been doing blw since she was 6 mo. I'm very pleased with how it's gone, her manipulation of objects is great and she's happy to eat small amounts of a wide variety of foods, but she is only having little bits. I watch friends babies eating whole jars and I wonder when dd is going to eat more? I'm still bf a lot, I guess that's where dd is getting much of her nutrician from.

Maybe 10 months? Not before then, perhaps even a bit older!

OneLittleBabyGirl · 01/02/2012 15:11

Just before 9mo for us. That's when DD got her fine pincer grip and can pick up peas and raisins and push them into her mouth. DD is a PFB, so I have nothing to compare with. But nursery says she eats heaps. I assume that means she eats at least the same or more than puree babies.

FredFredGeorge · 01/02/2012 15:39

within a few weeks (so less than 7 months) DD was eating at least the equivalent of a whole jar in volume (which is likely more in calories) - particularly of foods she could eat easily. Not every mealtime, sometimes she doesn't eat much, sometimes a bit, sometimes loads, with the milk being her main nutrition it doesn't matter anyway.

Remember purees and jars have a lot more water than normal food so appear much more bulked up than the equivalent normal food.

mousymouseprice · 01/02/2012 15:46

around 10m old. before that lots of nibbling and tasting but no real food intake.

sleeplessinderbyshire · 01/02/2012 19:10

my DD is 29 months and still hardly eats (but I suspect this is not a good example to give you)

attheendoftheday · 01/02/2012 19:59

Ok, thanks everyone. As long as 8 months isn't an unusual age to not really be eating much I won't worry.

Somewhere between 9 and 10 months. It just went from virtually nothing to whole platefuls overnight. Something just clicked.

Unlurked · 01/02/2012 20:05

Dd1 was 14mo. Just started eating loads overnight! Still bf morning noon and night for months after that. She still eats like a horse now.

I think dd2 started eating proper amounts before she turned 1yo but tbh I wasn't paying that much attention cos she's a poor neglected second child Grin

Rikalaily · 01/02/2012 20:07

About 11m - 1yr, since then I haven't been able to fill them :)

YuleingFanjo · 01/02/2012 20:11

mine is 13 months and still only eating bits. I sympathise with the seeing other babies eating jar-fulls but remember that those babies will probably eat less once faced with fingerfoods.

MrsDobalina · 01/02/2012 20:12

With both it coincided with going back to work and massively having to cut down day feeds and stopping night feeds - so not till 1 for DD. Her appetite doubled almost overnight so I'm sure she must have been getting 50% of her calories from breast milk (she did bf a lot!!).

33goingon64 · 01/02/2012 20:16

About 8 months. Breakfast was the first meal he started wolfing down, coincidentally (?) when he stopped wanting a bf first thing.

browneyesblue · 01/02/2012 20:18

About 11 months - all of a sudden he just seemed to get it. I had to keep reminding myself that he was still getting most of his nutrition from milk.

deaconblue · 03/02/2012 20:02

At 8 months dd ate a full Xmas dinner followed by trifle! She developed an amazing hand shovel thing and could scoop up anything she fancied. Until this point though she ate only bits and bobs. She was bf til 13 months so got lots of nutrients from that too

MrsWifty · 05/02/2012 11:44

Same as Pascha, 9-10 months and seemingly overnight, when he got the hang of swallowing larger lumps.

GoitreGirl · 05/02/2012 17:46

My BLW 10mo is still not actually eating much either- but she is definately making progress. I think I had the same concerns as you, i.e. my BLW baby (who completely refuses a spoon BTW) at 8 months wasn't really eating anything, particulary compared to the puree babies.

But now, I can see that she's definately getting some more bits in and its coming together. But my main point is that, honestly, it seems like loads more faff now, but remember those puree babies still need to progress onto lumps and finger food, so whilst it may seem like its taking ages suddenly our LOs will get proper eating and that will be it (food fads aside!)- we won't need to bother doing anything else. Imagine a puree baby completely refusing lumps etc, I expect that would be harder to deal with.

I think we just have to trust that.... If its any help also, my HV wasn't at all concerned and that she has seems loads of blw babies not eat anything and then suddenly at 1 start eating etc.

Thanks for this thread, I was wondering the same thing (DS is 9 months).

Satine5 · 18/02/2012 16:45

Thank you for this thread! We have started 2 weeks ago and my LO would suck on food, but spitting up anything that comes off. When do they start chewing? When did you start giving 3 meals a day? I am still only doing two, as she is simply not that bothered.

rrreow · 18/02/2012 18:24

Satine my DS was chewing within a few weeks of BLW. But give it time, it's all about exploration at this stage. My DS (9 months) only just started eating bigger quantities (literally since yesterday! It was like someone else said, as if something just 'clicked') and had him on 2 meals a day until today when I've finally added breakfast (it wasn't that he wouldn't have eaten 3 meals, it was more a question of scheduling and timing).
