7 month old only eating fruit. What to do?

hi, my 7 month old dd started weaning at 5 1/2 months and loved everything i gave her. She always seemed so hungry at meal times so i started to give her veg followed by a fruit puree for pudding which she always polished off. The trouble is for the past week or so she has refused all vegetables (screaming the place down in the process) and only eaten the fruit. I think she knows whats coming next and would prefer to skip the main and get to the sweet stuff. Don't want to give her fruit all the time. Any suggestions?

I would say don't worry. Both my dd's (one is 3.5 the other 10 months) have gone through picky phases with food when they've rejected things. But they're both champion eaters on the whole. I think 7 months is too young to really be registering that she can hold off her savoury in favour of getting something sweet. Give it a few weeks and keep trying with the savoury, but don't try to force it on her. Just offer it and if she rejects it, take it away. You could if you like leave a pause before offering the fruit.

The other thing is to try some very sweet vegetables on her - when my dd2 was going through a fussy phase with food, she would still accept things like sweet potato, parsnip, carrots, even if she wouldn't take more 'challenging' stuff like broccoli, cauliflower etc.

Also you could try mixing some fruit with the savoury - parsnip and apple is good, sweet potato with pear, avocado and banana etc.

She'll be getting the bulk of her nutrients from her milk still at this stage, so no need to panic about a balanced diet!

Try mixing fruit and veg together?

Oh same as pidge.

thanks pidge. v useful.
Actually she just ate a load of butternut squash (but the apple and potato was a no no). I suppose i just got used to her eating everything i gave her and i do tend to overreact a little!

If it's any consolation my dd2 ate EVERYTHING in sight when we first weaned her at 6 months, for 6-8 weeks she didn't reject a single thing and didn't leave a mouthful in the bowl. Then suddenly she got choosy and would only eat a very limited range of veg, and a few fruit things. But now (at 10 months) she's back on track, and provided she's not coming down with a cold or something she's back to wolfing huge portions of pretty much everything we throw at her!

Good luck.

Please try not to worry too much.
Ds has the appetite of a horse and eats everything going.

Saying that , he goes through stages where for a few days or a few weeks, he will refuse all sorts of things, including his absolute favourites - when he refused sausages, I nearly fainted.
One month he is woolfing down cauliflower and broccoli, and then the next, he won't touch it.

Try not to worry.

My six month old is very similar. His all time favourite is tinned prunes and greek yoghurt. The one veg he will eat readily is sweet potato. I find he eats other veg a bit better if I load it with grated cheese. Depends how you feel about giving dairy though.

DS did that too - and TBH I can see why as pureed veg is a bit dull. In his case he improved when I started giving him much more textured and interesting savoury food (and particularly if it was something I was eating and I fed him off my plate) - so I think the first thing was mushroom risotto (had to chop the mushrooms up small, obviously) and then generally trying to find interesting things for him to eat. The general approach seems to be that if I wouldn't eat it he's unlikely to eat it. Doesn't work for everyone but might be worth a try.
