my 8 month old loves houmous (sp?) on breadsticks or anything - but I think it may be quite high in salt. I tend to get the fresh one from the deli counter so there is no list of ingredients on the pot. Please tell me I can carry on giving it to her!!

Hummus (it's got about 4 spellings I think!) is generally chickpeas, tahini (sesame seeds), lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, and some salt. My baby and toddler veg book says commercial ones are high in salt and so gives a recipe but I doubt there's that much salt in a bit of it from the deli. Sorry, useless I know, I think I'd prob carry on, it's very healthy. But if you're remotely worried you could make some. Although mine is NEVER as nice as bought ones, no idea why.

I have also tried to make it but it ends up as a really thick tasteless sludge! I know it's meant to be healthy because of the chickpeas etc so I would like to give her some occasionally.

Too salty unless you make your own.

The big problem with humous is the sesame seeds, which are a potential allergen and are best avoided if you have a family history of allergies. If you don't then it should be fine.

Donnie, you could try making it and adding greek yoghurt, iirc that's what Nigella recommends. I bet that makes it nicer.

thanks, I may well give that a go.

My DS loves houmous too. I make my own - add bit of soya milk or soya yogurt to make it not so thick. I also read that commercial ones are higher in salt. once I've made it I freeze it in ice cube trays - defrost when needed!
