Introducing new food......and getting him off packet stuff

my ds (6 months) totally refused baby rice and rusks........so we tried him on Cow & Gate breakfasts and he loves them. I have now started giving him lunch too but want to get him eating some savoury food, and to have a varied diet.
i have tried the sweet veg, and he won't entertain any of it. so i thought ok we'll go with fruit instead......not interested. all he wants is Sunshine Orange/Apple and Blueberry/ Yoghurt with Orange and Banana cereal mixes. The only addition i've managed to get in is yoghurt.
i'm not overly worried at the moment because it's early days but obviously i need to get a wider range of stuff into him, especially when he starts to reduce his milk intake. He currently has between 30-40 oz of formula a day so he's definitely getting what he needs from that.
any advice how to approach this.......so far the only thing i've tried is mixing the new food with baby rice to take the flavour down a bit but he won't eat it as he detests the rice.....

Hi Moschops,

Could you start mixing a small amount of fruit puree through the breakfast cereal and gradually add more puree & less cereal as he gets used to the taste. I have only been weaning my ds for a few weeks and he hated the sweet veg at first although he likes it now. It may be worth trying it again in a few days. Good luck.

Have you tried him on just ordinary pureed apple/pear or carrot/swede?

moschops · 19/01/2006 13:45

i went to my local grocers and asked which are the sweetest apples available at the moment as i think the ready prepared stuff is just too tart for him. pureed him a Royal Gala apple today and although not too keen he didn't pull the usual face when he doesn't want to eat something. i mixed it in with his apple and blueberry cereal and he ate it all.

i guess i'll just have to be devious about sneaking veg into his diet.
like i say i'm not worried about it right now but would like to get it sorted sooner rather than later.

Yes I remember my two screwing their faces up at what I thought were sweet apples at that stage.

stir some fruit puree into the yoghurt?

courgette puree is nice ( it is honest !) quite sweet - also goes well with potato.

I would wean him off the packets asap - mix more & more fruit/veg in each day until you don't have to add any of the packet mixes.

heinz do some simply fruit which is quite handy, I remember taking these onhols with me & the blueberry & apple going down very well - I think the blueberry takes the tartness out of the apple.

Also try pumpkins as they are nice & mild.
