Another BLW question - travelling!

Hi guys again, this forum really is great for getting information from seasoned baby led weaners, and I have another question (DS is 5 months so we havent started yet):
I know that with BLW it can take quite a long time for baby to eat. My mum is supportive but quite sceptical of pure BLW as she said that there will be times when I dont have time to sit around waiting for him to take his time exploring and I will need to just quickly spoonfeed him something convenient (for example we are going on holiday to France when he will be about 7 months and the journey will take the whole day). Therefore I should feed him some purees on a spoon to get him used to this.

Is she right? Should I do a mixture? Or is it possible to stick with letting him feed himself and if so, what could I give him when we are travelling?

Sandwiches, breadsticks, bite size bits of cucumber, cooked carrot, cold pasta with tuna, onion and red pepper. Anything you can put in a pot and transport and can be picked up with fingers is fine.

She might be stuffing her face for England, or doing similar to my son and smearing it round her mouth followed by lobbing it across the room. At 7 months its actually fine if she just ends up drinking milk for a day.

However, there's also nothing wrong with taking a couple of jars/pouches for convenience. Its all fine, really. Smile

Occasionally life does get in the way, and needing to feed a baby at a time that suits what else is happening is equally a pain however you feed them.

The BLW police won't mind if you spoon him something occasionallySmile but you probably want to give him something you know he will eat.

I would think about fruit, little sandwiches, cooked carrot sticks, cucumber sticks, chip shaped pieces of mango/pineapple, strips of turkey/chicken. If you are going on the ferry and eating yourself then just give him some of what you have. It may not be ideal but if it is just one day then a piece of pizza or a few chips may go down well, just avoid anything very salty. I would take a small plastic plate to put his portion on.

If you wanted to take 'baby food' then maybe the pouches would work. DS was BLW and he would happily eat any of the above at 7m, but he was a gannet.

I think that taking a BLW baby travelling is much easier than feeding purees. When he's 7 months, you'll be able to give him a nice bit of baguette and a pear when you stop, or whatever is available, rather than faffing with heating purees up. Its not like you are going to be able to take very short breaks on the way with a baby, so speed won't be of the essence

If you are stopping to have a meal yourself then I would pack up some of Pascha suggestions. If you aren't really stopping for a decent amount of time I would just give him milk. When my DS was 7 mths, sometimes if he was tired he wouldn't want solids so he would have a bottle instead and when we drove from London to North of England which was a 4-5 hour trip we didn't want a long stop so just gave him milk that day. I personally would take the easy option and give him milk, at least you when hes likely to be hungry again and can shedule your next stop accordingly.

He might not be eating a proper meal all that frequently, you could always stuff him up on porridge and banana (eaten with hands, of course) first thing before you leave and just have snacky stuff for later.
