Bf and weaning - 6.5 mo

Hi all! My 6.5 mo ds is weaning onto solid food extremely well. We mix spoonfeeds and fingerfoods, and he's really enjoying it!! I'm worried about his milk intake (bf). I'm back at work full time and this is the schedule:
7am bf
10am- readybrek and 2 oz ebm
1 pm- 3 or 4 oz ebm
4 pm- potatoes, veg
6pm bf
8pm bf and bed.
Midnight bf ( may skip this)
3am bf
5am bf

I just wonder if he is getting enough milk, as although I leave 6 oz for him daily, he never takes it? It seems very little for a whole day! Would he really be taking enough at night to make up for it? Also, he seems keen fir another meal / supper. And I dont want to forego milk to give it to him- what would you do? He'll be 7 mo on the 30 Jan. TIA.

I should mention that the night time bfs are very short x

It's been a while since I was in the weaning loop and dd is only just 15 wks so a while off yet, but I think at 6.5mnths there should be more 'food' so to speak. Still offer the milk as it is important though Smile. What sort of things is dc eating as finger foods?

FuzzzyDuck · 20/01/2012 00:23

Ps, I know ur post was about milk intake.. What about foods that are good for calcium? Such as cheese, yoghurt etc.

Mampig · 20/01/2012 10:27

Yeah- he will take yogurt. I think I've confused myself - am I aiming to increase solids, or limit them to ensure full milk quota? Then I see "food is for fun until they are 1" and I'm not sure what I should be doing!!!
Should I just aim for 3 meals a day plus snacks, and bf the other times?

I think you will be aiming for 3 meals a day, but still ensure plenty milk. If you don't feel dc is drinking enough, then try to get as much calcium in from food items, which you are doing. My approach is kinda half blw and half spoon feeding but with plenty of fingers foods offered ie cheese chunks, bread sticks, fruit slices etc.

Thanks Fuzzzy- puts it into perspective!!

Mampig - You are aiming to maintain milk feeds but add in 'complementary foods' rather than swap milk for foods.

I post this everywhere as it really does cut through the confusion about solids vs. BM

6-8m need 130 kcals of complementary foods and 485 kcals from milk (approx 650ml of bm at 75kcals per 100ml) total 615 kcals a day

9-11m need 310 kcals of complementary foods and 376 kcals from milk (approx 500ml of bm at 75kcals per 100ml) total 686 kcals a day.

12-23m need 580 kcals of complementary foods and 314 kcals from milk (approx 420ml of bm at 75kcals per 100ml) total 894 kcals a day.

Full details here on page 18. Please note that there is different values for industrialised/developed countries and developing countries. I have listed the industrialised/developed countries figures.

HTH.
