trying to get dd to drink water, so have to sterilise the beaker then boil the kettle and then allow to cool so she can drink it, how long can i leave in the cup tho, a few hours 2/3 or longer, do I have to keep boiling up more water if she is say having lunch and maybe drinking a little and then boil up some more water for tea time, sorry I know its a daft question

How old is your dd? I wouldn't worry about leaving water in a cup - it's not like milk.

Gloworm · 18/01/2006 10:19

I would let her drink from the same beaker of water all day, then strerilise the beaker at the end of each day.

(I assume if she can drink out of a beaker she is at least 5 or 6 months old?}

nailpolish · 18/01/2006 10:22

same as gloworm, i would just sterilise the beaker at the end of the day. i would change the water occasionally to give fresh water but maybe 3/4 times a day, without re-sterilising the beaker

dont make unnecessary work for yourself, its not like its milk

shellybelly · 18/01/2006 10:23

she is 6 1/2 months, still struggling to get her to drink out of it, one because its water and two because its a beaker, going ot persevere tho

you could store some freshly boiled cooled water in a bottle in the fridge every morning, then you wouldnt have to keep doing the whole boiling/cooling all day.

nailpolish · 18/01/2006 10:26

how long have you been giving her the beaker? it can take a wee while til they start drinking properly from a beaker

dont fill it up too much as that can be too heavy for them, and just let her play with it, always have it close by for her, and she will just one day do it beautifully!

How old is your dd? Sterelising isn't so important once they are over 6mths. I only sterelised bottles at that age. But feeding and drinking utensils i didn't bother.

You could pour some boiled water in a jug with a lid, and leave it on the side all day and top her cups up from it. I would just change the water every morning.

A tip if shes not keen on the beaker - try taking the lid off. My dd only ever drank from a cup.

I didn't ever sterlise DS's beaker .

hewlettsdaughter · 18/01/2006 10:30

Actually, come to think of it, PicadillyCircus, neither did I

PiccadillyCircus · 18/01/2006 10:31

Thinking more about it, I never sterlised any of his bowls etc.

Tinker · 18/01/2006 10:34

Nor do I. And I just use tap water, not boiled.

hotmama · 18/01/2006 10:56

Over 6 months - don't need to sterlize feeding bowls or cups etc. However, the guidance is to still sterilize feeding bottles that you give milk in etc until a year old.

Also, after 6 months it is fine just to give tap water - doesn't have to be boiled and cooled.

Also, it can takes ages for them to get used to a beaker - so just pesevere - all of a sudden they will drink - phew! HTH
