7 Month DS can he have couscous and pasta now?

Cratchit · 17/01/2006 14:59

He's been on solids for 6-7 weeks now and is now eating all forms of veg and fruit well, with gentle lumps. He's also doing some finger foods - toast, bread, rice cakes biscotti.

Do you think I can now try pasta, rice and couscous and should I blend/whizz them to start with or give it all whole? Also I'm avoiding dairy a bit or at least keeping it to a minimum, is there any reason not give olive oil.

Thanks in advance, if that's not a thread-killing thing to say!

Hope so as have given DD 7m pasta (chopped went down fine).

chocolateshoes · 17/01/2006 15:28

I've been giving rice - whizzed a bit, couscous - as it is, and chopped spag since 6mths & ds loves it all.

Don't know about olive oil. Alot of recipes say veg oil.

I haven't tried rice cakes yet, but had, in fact planned to for tea today. Does your lo eat a whole one?

Racers · 17/01/2006 15:34

i used olive oil. my DD has a whole (baby) ricecake, or a couple sometimes. couscous is a good idea. will try that.

shellybelly · 17/01/2006 16:36

dd saw the dietician yesterday and we were told to give her pasta (give spiral ones as finger food), coucous should be ok
infact we were told she could have mayonnaise which I was surprised at erm rich tea biscuits anything full fat really to get some calories into her

springerspaniel · 17/01/2006 17:03

Cous cous! What an excellent idea. Never thought of it. I'll try it tomorrow. I know what I would have it with but any ideas for baby? I am on WW and baby is on high calorie diet - not a good combination! LOL

sweetkitty · 17/01/2006 17:10

Be warned cous cous makes a brilliant mess.

serenity · 17/01/2006 17:12

I found the quick cook pasta cooked up softer than the ordinary ones - makes great finger food as well.

bobbybobbobbingalong · 17/01/2006 17:23

Olive oil is great because it doesn't have added preservative or emulsifier. Also Rice bran oil is very good for the same reason.

Bubbaloo · 17/01/2006 21:38

Hi Cratchit.
I've also bought some Couscous for ds to try.
Thought I might do a big batch so wondered if anyone knows whether it can be frozen or not.Same with pasta, please?

TeddyRobinson · 17/01/2006 21:39

Cous cous is the most fab thing to give a baby - ds3 lived on it! Fabbo and much easier, both to cook and manage, than pasta. Pasta good for finger food though.

Bubbaloo · 17/01/2006 21:45

TR-Do you know if it can be frozen though?.

TeddyRobinson · 17/01/2006 21:46

I don't know, I don't think I ever did because it's so quick and easy to do. I think I just froze bolognese or a tomato pasta sauce for example - then would defrost that and heat up but then do the cous cous fresh. I seem to remember keeping some in the fridge and it went quite dry.

Bubbaloo · 17/01/2006 21:49

Thanks for that.
I don't actually eat pasta or couscous myself,so thought it would be handy to make and freeze, rather than cook tiny amounts each time.

bobbybobbobbingalong · 18/01/2006 08:45

Couscous is the easiest thing to make a tiny amount of. You could literally make 1 teaspoon of the stuff.

Why are you feeding your child things you don't eat yourself?

Bubbaloo · 18/01/2006 10:04

Oh there was me thinking you had to boil it in a saucepan. Can tell it's not something I'm used to.
I'm just trying ds out on a number of things. It's not that we don't like pasta,we just hardly ever eat it as it doesn't agree with me.
So far ds has had chicken curry, cod in cheese sauce, beef casserole and cottage pie as main meals. Was thinking of adding the couscous to the curry and casserole, just to make a bit of a change.

Cratchit · 20/01/2006 21:21

Thanks to all, will push on with pasta and couscous.

Bubb - don't feel over couscous, why on earth would you know how to cook it. I didn't for ages and ages.

Just in case it's useful, my rule of thumb, which took ages to sort (!), is same quantity of water hot or cold or stock, to couscous. x

Bobby - Don't think it's bad at all to feed your kids things you don't eat yourself. For eg I give my DS porridge every am for various reasons but also in the hope that it's a good start for him, both to his life and the day. I don't eat it myself but I've tasted it and it's fine, just not my bag, but there are other things I give him that I don't eat too. I'd never give him something he didn't like, so I'm not sure what your point is really...

Springer - I did couscous with roast veggies the other day and a sun dried tom dresing - the latter maybe not ? - but the veggies would be fine I think, they were only done with olive oil.

Bubb - menat to say before with couscous you measure x of couscous and then measure exactly the same of cold water can be hot or stock pour on, fork briefly and then leave it for half an hour, If you're trying to hurry cover the bowel with cling film. If i'm makng a salady thing after about 15 mins I then add a dressing and leave it a bit longer. I don't know about freezing couscous or pasta, not clever enough, though I do freeze home-ready made lasagne but the pasta isn't cooked
