Weaning- am I doing it right?

Hi, first time mum my DS is 6.5 months and I have been giving him solids for about 3 weeks now, the thing is it's all seeming a bit easy and I'm wondering am I doing it right.

I am mostly trying to stick to blw with the odd baby custard, well mashed potato etc. He doesn't seem fussed on porridge so at breakfast time I give him toast soilders or some pears or peaches to chomp on, lunch time is usually something I'm having like bread dipped in homemade soup or fruit, and dinner time is potato, cooked carrot stick or similar vegetable or chicken.

He seems to love messing about by himself and especially loves fruit, but not as fussed on being fed by spoon and always tries to grab it and do it himself. He can eat a peach slice off a baby fork as it's too slippery to hold.

I just feed him when I/ we are eating so no real set
times although usually around the same time each day.
When I'm out and about I sometimes bring fruit with
me and sometimes he'll have some of my soup for
example. There are days he doesn't have 3 meals, he
may not get breakfast if I'm in a hurry to get out of the
house.

He doesn't seem to eat a lot really unless it's
something very easy to eat like the bread, so he
probably isn't getting alot of fruit as it's harder for him to bite/chew. He takes about 28- 32 oz a day still.

No one I know does blw so they all think I'm a bit odd for doing it and I know they think he's not getting a lot
to eat really. Sil's baby of the same age eats porridge, and full potato and gravy mashed at lunch and a full individual pot of ambrosia custard every day, so my DS seems to be eating considerably less.

So what I'm asking is, is what I'm doing ok, should be
be eating at same time every day, same amount of meals and is what he's eating ok? Advice appreciated.

Oops sorry for long post, but didn't want to drip feed.

Sounds as if you're doing just fine to me. Really, as long as your baby is old enough (he is) and is developmentally ready (sounds like he is ) then there really is no right or wrong way of weaning your child. It's whatever works for you.

If it doesn't work for you to have set mealtimes, then don't.

3 meals and 2 snacks a day is something to work towards by about age 1.

Food is for fun until they're one - so until age 1 the main part of a child's diet is milk (decreasing in amounts until they're on about 300ml by 1 year old) regardless of whether you do BLW or traditional spoonfed-puree-and-finger-food weaning.

Some days they eat more, some days they eat less. Some days they'll eat nothing at all no matter what you offer.

You are doing great. It sounds like your LO loves his food. My DD was very keen on the self feeding and once she got her pincer grip around 8.5mo she started eating so much more. It's amazing when you see they can chomp away at baked potatoes or risotto, things that defeats them just a month ago.

Once your LO can pick things up better you can add mini wheat type of cereals. She loves picking each piece up to eat.

Also you can but tubes and pouches of fromage frais. It's for toddlers but blw babies can squeeze the pouches themselves.

Thanks fliss, I felt it was going well but when I seen my niece putting away the pot of custard in a couple of minutes it shocked me, as some meals he's eating next to nothing, she did start solids at 15 wks so perhaps that's makes the difference.

Just want to feel totally confident I'm doing it right as family are starting to question my methods a bit.

Onelittlebaby girl, his grip is quite good, just that peaches are slippery so I think I'll give the mini wheats a go, I assume you just soak them in milk to make them soft but not totally soggy?

Custards are sweet and babies love sweet food. If you aren't convinced get one of those Ella pouches and let your LO suck away. Grin

My DD won't let anything on a spoon near her except yoghurt. I think it's because it's sweet like a pudding!

OneLittleBabyGirl · 08/01/2012 21:42

Yes I just soak the mini wheats a bit to make them slightly soggy.

You're doing fine by the sounds of things. I did BLW, but was lucky enough to have my SIL also doing it with her second child at the same time and although she didn't live near, I didn't know anyone else who was doing it so she was a great source of support. It can be difficult on your own, but I came on here a lot to ask 'silly questions' and see that other mums were being the same.

However you wean, it's a time when you go from having kind of figured everything out to it all changing and feeling constantly uncertain about your actions. Don't worry, it's normal!
