my dd is 6 1/2 months, she can't quite sit up unaided (couple of seconds at the most) we feed solids in her bouncy chair however she is always trying to sit up, went to MC to buy a highchair and was told not to get one till she can sit up unaided even tho all high chairs say "suitable from 6 months or when child can sit unaided" so don't know what to do, any suggestions?? should I go ahead and buy one, she should be ok if they have the safety harness things shouln't she??

I have (for sale but I am not trying to sell it to you now!) a feeding seat that tilts so it really is suitable for any baby, even new born. Hang on a minute and I will provide a link for you.

biglips · 15/01/2006 14:07

put in her in the pram and you'll find it she can sits still!

shellybelly · 15/01/2006 14:08

this is similar to what I used. Anyway, made by this company.

suzi2 · 16/01/2006 11:16

Mothercare do a reclining booster seat with 5 point harness. It's about £35 I think.

shellybelly · 16/01/2006 11:41

thanks, am going to get one this week, we saw the dietician today and she said that dd should really be in one [smil]

does anyone use the bumbo chair? Just that I think I will need to wean dd in the next 4-6 weeks and she is no where near ready for high chair (19weeks). They are a bit cheaper £27 in mothercare and wondered whether people thought it would be a good investment or not?

mumfor1sttime · 16/01/2006 13:17

I bought a High chair from Mothercare and I hated using it! Found it to be clumsy and far too big!

I used the a bouncy chair and pushchair because I could adjust seat, and when ds was sitting up, I bought a Tomy booster seat from ebay which straps onto dining chair. I would never have another High chair!

PrettyCandles · 16/01/2006 13:23

We got a reclining, height-adjustable one (Chicco, I think) and found it very convenient. It's much easier for a very young baby to eat leaning back, and they can rest upright for a while after the meal, if, like dd was, they're sicky types - much less likely to chuck than if placed on back or tummy directly after a meal. Some children even have a doze in the chair afterwards. It's also easier to feed the baby than if they're wobbling about.

We used the chair for both children until they were about 2.5y and ready to sit at table without grabbing or knocking everything. We drew the chair (with its tray) up to the table when we all ate together. The adjustable height is nice because from a certain age they loved being able to climb in by themselves.

Auntymandy · 16/01/2006 13:24

stuff a cushin down the back to keep her propped up!!

Laura032004 · 16/01/2006 13:52

We had a highchair insert to help keep ds upright in the early days. I think it was from Mothercare, but my mum also bought one from Toys'r'us.

gingernutlover · 16/01/2006 14:07

laura - how old was your lo when you started in a hgih chair with insert cuchion - we have one of those and reins and have tried her in it and she seems fine - but the mothercare catalogue said not to use it til they can sit unaided so I was thinking I should get something for inbetween now and then. She sits supported - think big cloth nappy helps! and holds her head very well.

Laura032004 · 16/01/2006 14:24

Probably about 5-6 months. He wasn't weaned until 6-7 months, but would sit at the table with us when we ate. Hmmm - he has cloth nappies too, maybe that makes a difference!

Bumbos are great BTW - DS loved sitting in them well past the recommended age range!

shellybelly · 16/01/2006 15:10

think I'm going to phase out the bouncy chair, we have a bumbo chair and from last night I've been feeding dd in it till we get a high chair, I think its good coz its encouraging her to sit up, I've had to put a wipe clean mat underneath it (free in mother/baby mag) she is now spending time looking down at the mat rather than eating her lunch ah well not to worry

shellybelly · 16/01/2006 16:08

This is a Bumbo . My friend uses one with her DS, especially for feeding. It seems to work great.

Kelly1978 · 16/01/2006 16:12

I found bumbos far too awkward for feeding in the early days as baby was too upright and all the food kept comign out again! I used a reclining high chair suitable from birth, a mamas and papas dondolino and bypassed the bouncy chair altogether.

SpikeMomma · 16/01/2006 22:21

someone told me that they used to roll two towels up and shove them down the sides of their little'un whilst she was sat in her high chair - and it worked ok. worth a shot!

chocolateshoes · 17/01/2006 12:48

We've got a Stokke highchair & ds has happily sat & fed in it propped up with various rolled up muslin cloths etc since 4 months.

gingernutlover · 17/01/2006 13:30

thanks the rolled up towels sound a good idea and dd just slides around in the highchair at the moment - worried about ther banging her head! It is one of those cube ones which turns into a table and chair later, seemed a good idea at the time now I iwhs we'd gone for a reclining one.

Sadeyedladyofthelowlands · 18/01/2006 07:52

We have the fisher price high chair which has a reclinable back for babies who cannot yet set unassisted. DD used it from 4 months old, it is brilliant. I'd recommend it, definately.

shellybelly · 18/01/2006 09:23

anyone else have any recommendations on which highchairs are good, there are so many to choose from I have to say I don't want to spend a fortune on one, tho one that has height adjustment would be good

OP posts:
hotmama · 18/01/2006 09:36

I have the M&P Prima Pappa one - comes in different designs. Is suitable from 4 months as it tilts (also helpful when they fall asleep when feeding ). It also has a height adjustment, a removable tray so easy to clean (has another tray undeneath so they can play e.g. crayoning etc).

It isn't particularly cheap - about £100 but can be bought cheaper on the internet. I think it is good value as will get a lot of use - esp as dd2 is due soon.
