blood in faeces

I stopped breastfeeding at xmas and my 19 week old dd is happily on formula. She is really thriving and happy (75th centile for weight and 98th for length) On Monday she pooed whilst I was changing her nappy and I noticed the tiniest streak of pinky red blood on her stool. Would never have noticed it if had just seen a dirty nappy. I went to the health visitor on tues and forgot to mention it. Because she has more than doubled her birth weight, is drinking 36+ fl oz of formula a day and started waking early for food after sleeping through - the hv suggested slowly introducing some baby rice which I did. dd loved it.
Yesterday I noticed the blood again and googled it - it seems that this could be due to a fissure OR an allergy to formula. I have got an appointment with the gp for wed.

Should i try get an urgent appointment? I really have to say that dd is the picture of health and one of the happiest babies I know. And should I stop the baby rice?

Am posting this on the allergies area too as not sure where to ask the question- sorry.

Have you actually had a look for a fissure?

If it is on the stool rather than in the stool, I would suspect a fissure. Particularly as she is on formula and baby rice - makes for a far more solid stool than breastmilk, and these can cause fissures.

See if you can see one. One of the many lovely ways to spend a Saturday afternoon with a baby.

Good you are getting to see a doc. I agree - fissure is possible, but it could be some slight bleeding from the gut because of the rice.

Don't know why your HV suggested baby rice - she's very young for solids (your baby, not the HV!)

sorry, meant to add....stop the baby rice and see if the bleeding clears up. Then you will have more evidence to go on, when you see the doc.

The bleeding started before the rice. Think it was suggested because she is big and hungry (7.5kg and 68cm)and waking 4 hourly for food overnight.
Can you see the fissure - will have a peek tomorrow in the daylight.

No mucous and although not like breast fed poos - reasonably soft. Sorry for all this graphic detail! Didnt give her rice today and will hold off for a few weeks.

She has always been a 'happy vomiter'- even when bf. Problem she is so hungry she downs 8oz and then vomits quite a bit up. Doesnt bother her - just means loads of changes of outfit for both of us and constantly cleaning pram. car seat etc!
