1 year old DS doesn't like taking milk from sippy cup...please advise

My year old DS has two milk feeds - morning and night - and he can definitely go through all he's offered (150ml each time). We use bottles for this as he was FF.

But he won't really take much from a sippy cup. He'll start, have some, then pull away and be disinterested.

  • does this mean he's drinking all the milk from the bottle out of habit?
  • or that he's not ready for the sippy cup?

I'd like to encourage him to use the cup so he gets used to it (he has all his water from sippy or doidy cup).

Thanks

Now he's 12 months he only needs 300ml of milk a day, so I'd ditch the bottles which is in line with current advice and give him the milk in a sippy cup. Its not really important if he doesn't drink the full bottle as long as he gets 300 ml over the day. You could always introduce a cup of milk with his midmorning or mid after noon snack or both if you are worried he's not getting enough dairy.

Have you tried a doidy cup? They're open top, and a funny shape, can get them for about 4 quid off Amazon. My little one is nearly 7 months old and drinks all his water and juice from it, and is starting to have the occasional bit of milk from it. x

He shouldn't be having a bottle at one. Also, give him a normal cup.

rachey26 · 04/01/2012 14:46

Sorry - just read you've tried doidy cup!

Mys DS2 was the same and once he gave up the bottle has never really had much milk. (tall for age, normal weight, perfectly fit 8yo now, but still won;t drink milk!)

Does your DS have milk in/on cereal, eat cheese and yogurt etc? I'd keep offering it to him in a cup, but not worry too much if he doesn't have it.

Yes, we have a doidy cup. Thanks all. And Lisaro - loads of mums I know still give their kids a bottle at 1. It's not so unusual.

The only problem with drinking from a bottle is if the dc sucks continually for comfort but if he is downing his milk quick it's not really on his teeth for very long. I wouldn't worry about it,you know that he can drink from a cup as he has water from it.

keSnowBi · 06/01/2012 13:54

I also wouldn't worry. Many babies (and your son still is one) like milk IN the bottle for comfort. I'm not sure this is an issue, or why some people/authors get so aerated about children over the age of one having a bottle Confused. If he is not sucking on it all day (teeth issue as PP says), and is capable of drinking other liquids out of other vessels, then he's ok. This is also a period when seperation anxiety can be at its worst so comfort is helpful.
You could try again in a couple of months if it's bothering you.

nuby.com/en/nuby/cups-spouts hope that works....my two had these from a young age...DS at 1 and dd at 6 months....they are a good midway cup, they moved on to harder topped ones later....?

bonzo77 · 06/01/2012 14:14

Wouldn't worry. Let him have the bottle. Just make sure he has the night time one all in one go then brush teeth after. DS has only just stopped bottles at 22 months.

My DD still has one bottle in the evening and she is 19 months so not unusual for babies over one to be drinking from a bottle. My DD drinks water from a cup no problem but likes her milk in a bottle. Think its a comfort thing.

Both my DSs were like this. With them I discovered they just didn't like the 'feel' of the milk in anything but a bottle, they would drink other liquids from cups just not milk.

I would carry on with the bottle at night, (there's certainly nothing wrong with that at his age Hmm ) and maybe try to keep encouraging milk taken from a cup during the day.

At the end of the day provided he is physically able to drink from a cup there's really nothing to worry about.

My DSs ended up drinking their milk with a cup and straw as a compromise - just as long as they were getting it what did it matter?

bigkidsdidit · 18/01/2012 10:57

My one year old DS is the same! He has 6oz cow's milk in the mornign from a bottle (I offer 9oz) but refuses milk from a cup and now is even refusing from a bottle before bed :(

JJJ that link is very interesting. 300ml is 11oz yes? That's great - with a weetabix and two plum yogurts I could get 11oz in him. I thought the advice was 16? I was fretting about that Grin

I wouldn't worry at all. I think folk get too worked up about getting children off their bottle by one year - as long as they are not sucking on the bottle all day it's not that big an issue. My ds kept his bedtime bottle until he was almost 2 years. He was the same in that he refused (and still refuses) to take milk from a sippy cup, although he'd quite happily take water or juice in one. So we just went straight from taking milk in his bottle to having in in a 'big boy' glass (obviously with supervision!) no problem at all. Don't worry, he'll drop his morning bottle once he's eating more breakfast, and let him keep his night bottle for a bit longer.
