Just curious. Out of the babies I know atm, the ones who were weaned early (4mths) have big appetites and have no problem being spoon fed. The ones weaned later (5-6mths) eat like sparrows and will only entertain finger food. (BTW I am not saying big appetite = good, I am not an advocate of early weaning, just interested to see if you have found the same.. or different...)

Both my two were weaned at 4 months (and yes I knew the advice for both of them ).

DS2 - now 2 eats like a horse most meals and will eat anything

DS1 - now 5 - eats anything, but takes for ever to eat it - and generally eats less than his brother.

ds, not weaned until 6.5 months (nearly 8mo now), still isn't eating a lot, but that's because we've been introducing foods very gradually - but often when he likes something (eg sweet potato or apple!) he will wolf it down. He will take finger foods and eat from a spoon/fork and from our hands.

Auntymandy · 12/01/2006 18:46

my youngest now 15 months was weaned just turned 6 months, he never stops eating!!!

fruitful · 12/01/2006 19:10

dd - starting weaning at 15 weeks ish; eats like a sparrow but refused finger food and was on mush for ages, and was quite late to learn to feed herself with a spoon too

ds - started at 29 weeks; eats a reasonable amount (not huge appetite but ok!); will only have weetabix & yoghurt off a spoon - everything else has to be fingerfood

On the whole I prefer "I do it myself" to "Mummy do it all". But a combination would be easier.

Tinker · 12/01/2006 19:12

1st - weaned at 4 months, ate according to the books

2nd - weaned at 6 months, prefers finger foods, takes spoon off me, and eats quantities as per a small bird.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 12/01/2006 19:14

DS1 16 weeks - a bit picky at times
DS2 15 weeks - Eats anything you put in front of him and anyone elses if they dont eat it quick enough!

funnygirl · 12/01/2006 19:52

dd1 weaned at 16 weeks and eats loads. Sometimes I wonder if she eats too much.

Hulababy · 12/01/2006 19:58

DD was weaned at 4 months. She eats loads. Not much she doesn't like.

Not sure if related to weaning or not though.

ScummyMummy · 12/01/2006 19:59

Mine were weaned at 4 months and ate everything. At 6 years they are fussy little f*ers!

hunkermunker · 12/01/2006 20:05

DS was weaned at 6m, but didn't eat much till he was about 8m - he had predominantly finger food.

He eats more than me now - his appetite is remarkable. He's 21mo.

funnyonion · 12/01/2006 20:07

DS was weaned at 6months, he's now 20months and has a really good appetite.

mogwai · 12/01/2006 20:35

Weaned at 4-5 months on baby rice then veg. Had meat/dairy from six months.

Excellent appetite, nice spoonfuls and enjoys finger food

Clean plates every time.

WellieMum · 12/01/2006 20:39

dd is 16 months now and was weaned at 6 months.

Eats anything and everything, in huge quantities. Happy to eat off fork or spoon or self feed. Hope this lasts...

I would imagine that appetite is more of a "born" rather than "made" thing, but surely mode of eating will depend a bit on what they're used to and what their favourite foods are - not sure how age of weaning as such would influence this?

Tatties · 12/01/2006 21:58

I agree that appetite is probably nature rather than nurture, but my theory was that if babies were weaned at 4mths for example, there is no option but to spoon feed so that is what they get used to. Perhaps as they are younger they are more likely to accept this as part of their routine and continue to accept this as the way they are fed until they get older. By 6mths though, they want to be more independent, want to feed themselves more, and until their co-ordination improves this means they actually eat less initially (although in the long term I am sure they are much less fussy eaters). Just my theory..

Weaned at 6 months, eats anything I've offered - in vast quantities.

Piffle · 13/01/2006 11:35

both of mine were late weaned
ds was 8 mths by his choice - he ate the odd bite of my toast until 8 mths from 6 mths old but was not keen until 8 mths when he ate anything in sight
dd weaned 6 mths and eats really well, she is petite in size but eats more than many 3 yr olds her age.

GillL · 13/01/2006 12:22

My nephew (10 months) was weaned at 10 weeks because he was so hungry all the time. He still has a big appetite. My dd (9 months) was weaned at 6 months and eats a lot less - still on 2 solid meals a day because she won't have more than 7oz of formula per feed. She rarely cries with hunger even 4 hours after the last feed. She's quite small though (only 17lb) and her cousin is 28lb.
