Giving up bf - he won't like it

DS now 18 months and it's time to give up bf (at night). He still loves it and will go mad.

I have heard stories about children being take away for the weekend to do this by the father. What were your experiences of stopping bf when the desire to do so was only yours!

Aw, don't have him taken away, chicca. If it'll be hard for him, you not being there will only make it harder.

Spidermama · 10/01/2006 23:02

Ahhh Chicca, fair enough. 18 months eh? My big boy will be one in a couple of weeks and shows no signs of wanting to give up his night time guzzle.

I'm not usually one to disagree with F&Z but I think it sounds like a good idea. It would almost be worse for you to be there, but refuse him milk.

Good luck chicca and let us know how you get on.

JoolsToo · 10/01/2006 23:04

yes, good luck, you've done a great job - 18 months is excellent

(can't offer any real advice I bottle fed)

I think I may have misled you. I would love DH to whisk off DS and do it (or better still I bugger off!) but DH is not likely to offer to do that! Any other suggestions??

How did you manage it Yorkie?

You go away? Nice weekend with a girlfriend?

Don't know. Dd is eleven months and don't want to feed forever myself.

misdee · 10/01/2006 23:11

i cant imagine givijng up just yet aloha. maybe when dd3 is 18months i'll be ready to run away for a weekend lol.

I have a friend who is always going away (leaving the country) for a few days and she has a similar aged DD. I wouldn't go to that extreme, I haven't even ever left him with anyone else for the day.
Yorkie, DS sticks his hand down my shirt in public!

chicca my dd1 is 2.7 and still feeds three times a day max. on several occasions I have been away from her overnight on two occasions for three or four nights) and when I got back I can tell you NOTHING had changed lol and she still wanted to feed... what I am trying to say is that going awat for a few days is not necessarily, or even probably going to work. he is still going to remember after three days.

harpsichordcarrier · 10/01/2006 23:57

If there are aspects of his behaviour that are not acceptable e.g. sticking his hand down your top then can you just deal with that i.e. just be firm with him that he is not to do that?

chicca · 11/01/2006 19:09

Harpsi, I'm not sure if this is good or bad news. Do y mind me asking in what circumstances your DD feeds - at night? to get her to sleep?

Chicca, my ds undoes my shirt and on one memorable occasion, when I attempted to distract him with a cup of milk said very clearly "No, I want milkies FROM YOUR BREAST" [appalled laughter]

hi there
she still feeds in the morning (in our bed) before her nap and at bedtime (both in her bedroom). she doesn't feed to sleep on any of those times. I would say that the morning one is the only "feed" and the others are for comfort.
She feeds more and elsewhere if she is out of routine e.g. if she is ill or if we are on holiday - both flipping handy times to still be feeding btw.... also she has fed more often since the new baby arrived and now asks me sometimes when the baby is feeding if she can come on too. It is a kind of togetherness moment for them....
hth

harpsichordcarrier · 12/01/2006 10:07

sorry that wasn't that clear. I should say that she always goes in her cot awake and falls asleep by herself. and has done for a very long time.
