FREEZING ISSUE

I have been advised to start weaning my DS, he is 18weeks and 17lb 1oz, he started waking for extra feeds and never seems full when he has fed (exclusively breastfed baby). So I thought we as we are exclusively breastfed we would have a nightmare time feeding him, but Itook the plunge today, bought a jar of Hipp organic first tastes apple puree and he just couldn't get enough, absolutely loved it!!!!
A quick question, I know you can freeze homemade, and I do intend to make some, but can you freeze ready made baby puree?

I should think so... but to be honest you shouldn't need to as the jars are so small.

Spoon out what you think he'll eat and then put the lid back on the jar and pop it in the fridge

I have been told to start with a teaspoon measurement first, but he looks as though he wants more, first time earlier and he just gulped it down, was reaching for the spoon and got very excited. Is it okay to offer him more than a teaspoons at first?

keep in the fridge - should last up to 48 hours I think.

MarsLady · 07/01/2006 19:12

you offer a teaspoon to see if they like it.

DS1 was a ravenous beast bless him. As soon as he went on to solids he ignored all the guidelines about having a spoon or two.

You can always add a little baby rice to it.

Be happy that he likes it. Some babies completely refuse.

LRA, hiya - would just say that it's quite early to be starting solids (guidelines say 26 weeks) and this is a typical growth spurt time - don't go mad on different flavours or filling him up with purees if you decide to keep on giving him food. Who advised you to start (I'm betting HV?)?

loopyredangel · 07/01/2006 19:19

The HV advised it may be worth trying him! He just hasn't seem fulfilled with breast milk, and has been acting differently to when he has his growth spurts. Will keep it to a minimum though!

I tend to agree with hunker, but you must do what you feel is right.

DS couldn't get enough of the stuff, and has shown no ill effects, in fact he has perked up quite alot - not as sleepy!

Hiya

I had a similar experience with my BF DD, and started off on fruit purees only at 18 wks for first 3 wks, followed by root veg until 6 months. She was always v. hungry but maintaining 75th centile and didn't sleep through till nearly 6 mo. I added baby rice to homemade puree (just buy apples & pears and spend an hour, you'll make a week's worth or more). Freeze in ice cube tray and it's then easy to increase the amounts. I think with freezing shop bought, I don't see why not so long as you do it soon after opening the jar, not after it's sat around for 1/2 the day. DD is now 27 weeks and has slept through for last 2 weeks. She's eating everyting I put in front of her + 4 BF a day, some bubs just need more, so don't feel pressured about not holding out for the 26 wk mark. Good luck with yours & follow his lead, he'll let you know how much he wants to eat.
