Started weaning and now DD doesn't want milk... :(

My DD has never been that keen on her milk (she is FF), she has had bad reflux and it caused all manner of problems when she was younger. Anyway, I have just recently started weaning her - puree, a bit of cereal etc. And she now barely wants to drink her milk. Even though I always give her solids AFTER her bottle, she has still cut her milk intake by 30-50%.
Should I just roll with it?
Any advice much appreciated!!

Sorry, I can't help but am watching because I am having the same problem. Just out of interest, how much does she take of the solids?

PreHeatedOven · 01/12/2011 11:36

DS1 did this I seem to remember with his morning bottle. I made his cereal with Formula and gave him the rest of the bottle.
Sorry I guess that doesn't help too much

She is not having a huge amount of solids... I think she would probably have more but I slightly hesitate as I think it will mean she has even less milk! I keep reading that the solids are only for taste blahblah but that does not seem to be the case for my DD. She has never had a huge appetite anyway, and my DH was apparently exactly the same as a baby - perhaps it is down to their constitution!?
I am just not sure whether I crack on with solids and go with what she wants (not that I can really go with what she doesn't want!!)
At the moment I am just doing to solid feeds a day - probably 2 tablespoons each time.

DS (9 months) gave up his mid afternoon bottle a few days ago, and it looks like he will soon do it with his mid morning bottle too. I remember being worried and posting in here after I started weaning him, because he was having very little milk, even refusing his evening bottle (not his nightime bottle though Hmm)

For DS is was just a phase, although I struggle to get 500mls into him. He just loves his solids, and when I tried to cut down on the solids so he could have more milk he wouldn't have any of it. His weight gain is fine and he is very happy and healthy, so I think that's just the way he is.

However, AFAIK if they drink less than 16oz a day they need vitamin drops, you could give these to your DD and then not worry about the milk intake? If she eats diary it should be fine.

Thanks bankholiday - that made me feel better. She is having a check up in a week so I will chat to doc anyway. She certainly seems perfectly happy. She is not that into water either though so I do worry about liquid intake. But I guess one tends to worry about anything and everything with your first... so there we go! x

DD did this in the early weeks of weaning, then just kind of settled back into milk after a few weeks. Now at 9 months she is plenty keen enough on milk but is also having a good 3 meals a day.

My dd has the same problem, or rather its me with the problem. She is now 7 months and having 2or 3 meals a day and will never take more than about 3oz at any time, even in the morning!

So, what I have been doing is giving her a dream feed at about 8.30/9pm, (she goes to bed at 6.30). She will down any amount I give her, although I only give her about 4 oz just to top her up for the day. She is about 90% asleep so just drinks it and falls asleep straight away. It doesn't make her sleep any longer, It just puts my mind at rest when I know she hasn't had much during the day.

Just thought I would share that in case it helps someone else. Grin

I just rolled with it when DS went off his milk after he started weaning. It was a push to get 3oz down him at a time but I persevered by always making up a full bottle and letting him drink however much he wanted. After 4 weeks or so, he resumed to drinking the full 7oz again.

He never left any of his bedtime bottles, but all of a sudden now, at 8 months, he keeps leaving half of it. Then waking up early because he is hungry. Then sleeping lots throughout the day. Then not sleeping through.

They do go through phases (I'm hoping this one doesn't last much longer lol) so just persevere. I know many children who were never interested in milk after being introduced to solids, the parents just used other means of providing them with the all important stuff. You'll work it out :)

I really hope its a phase, I have been throwing so much milk away! Sad

Renard · 02/12/2011 05:13

Thank you all. I think it is also that she has WAY too many things to do in the day :) ... She has started crawling and she just wants to be on the floor all the time. Hopefully all will settle down. She slept until 8:30am this morning (we live abroad in a different time zone) which is unheard of for her, so she must be knackering herself out with all her action... She also managed 10oz yesterday evening so she seems to be milk loading!
However, I am expecting the usual 3oz feeds today.
