Are honey cheerios ok?

I'm thinking these should be ok, or is the risk of botulism for undetermined 1's still present?

I'd be more concerned that they'd be too salty. My HV was really only keen on Ready Brek and the occassional Weetabix for under 1s. And very against sweetened cereals for children at all.

Full of sugar and made by Nestle, I'd keep well away

pinkytheshrunkenhead · 23/11/2011 17:54

Ready brek? really? but it is so processed. What about normal porridge?

Cheerios, no way, sugary salty and nestle

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 23/11/2011 17:59

No to Cheerios. Try Weetabix, porridge, toast.

HappyCamel · 23/11/2011 18:06

Weetabix, porridge (3 mins in microwave), bread or toast, eggs are all better options.

BikeRunSki · 23/11/2011 18:10

The reason she liked Ready Brek is that it is very low salt, so if you want to use convinience cereal, that's the way to go. DS just had porridge.

pinkytheshrunkenhead · 23/11/2011 18:12

But it is more more convenient than porridge which is cheaper and more nutritious - I am amazed at that recommendation to be honest. I am too tight to buy ready break Blush

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 23/11/2011 18:25

Lots of responses! Good point re. sugar/salt/Nestles, am just trying to find different breakfast options for porridge-hating, spoon-refusing DD!

Hi WhoahThere

Dont think you would find any accurate info about risk of botulism from honey in cereal. It would really be up to you. The risk of botulism from uk honey is very low but after all the stuff in the news about the recent cases from a jar of lloyd grosmans curry. Me personally would probably give it a miss.
My DS gets asdas own version of shreddies now and again. Yes they are higher in sugar than porridge but they are good for a combination of spooning and BLW.
Mini weetabix might also be good for you LO to get a hold of.

Good luck Smile

RecursiveMoon · 25/11/2011 21:46

Definitely no to Cheerios (honey or not).

I'm not sure why ReadyBrek got a bashing unthread though - it only contains oats, vitamins, calcium, and iron. So it's fortified microwaveable porridge.

I'm amazed at the breakfast cereals that contain sugar - Weetabix, Shreddies etc. ReadyBrek is pretty much the only one that I've found that doesn't.

Just wanted to add.
Bread contains a surprising amount of sugar/salt. If we were all really extreme there wouldn't be much we could feed our babies!!!
So as long as everything is in moderation dont think any harm will be done...Wine
