My stupid husband had just given our 8 month baby cream cheese a month out of date. Will he be OK?

I'm worried basically. Any advice?

If it's bad the baby will be sick. Did you taste any? If it seemed off, smelt bad, tasted bad then your baby will probably be sick. I doubt much worse than that, but call NHS Direct if really worried.

GlaikitFizzog · 22/11/2011 12:41

Does the cheese taste off? I've used stuff for me and DH and looked at the date afterward and thought oops!

Just keep an eye on him, he might have a messy nappy or two. If he looks unwell call NHS/GP.

He'll be fine. Worst case he'll have a bit of upset tummy, but not necessarily.

There'll be so many preservatives in it that it will probably be safe to eat for another few months yet Wink

If it was 'off' I would have thought it would have been too mouldy, smelly and rank tasting to manage more than a taste.

Iggly · 22/11/2011 13:04

I was (still am) very careful with food when feeding DS (yes I do the sniff test, not just going by dates). So can see why the OP is Angry

If it's off, he'll start chucking up in a couple of hours plus dodgy nappies. Keep his fluids up and an eye on him over the next 12 hours.

blackoutthesun · 22/11/2011 13:04

if it was that off i doubt the baby would ate it

just keep an eye out but should be fine

MrsHollywood · 22/11/2011 13:42

Lady - the OP is asking for advice about the 8mo, not for opinions on the relative stupidity of the husband. Even people who have made mistakes themselves are allowed to ask for advice following someone else's mistake.

To answer the OP's questions, as everyone else has done, I'm sure he'll be fine as he's unlikely to have eaten it if it had been that bad. I'd be a bit worried, too, but I reckon a dodgy nappy is probably all you'll have to deal with, in which case just keep up the fluids!

wahwahwah · 22/11/2011 13:47

I am assuming that it was an unopened pack (or it would have been green) so it probably is absolutely fine. Ask him to taste it to see if it is off. It coulsn't have looked or smelled funny or he would have noticed.

I ate cottage cheese a week out of date yesterday (unopened pack) and since it looked ok, smelled ok and the pack hadn't swelled up (even if it is 'in date' I won't eat anything from a swollen pack), and I am still alive (no evidence of poisoning). I think a baby will be ok too.

I would have thought out of date cheese is probably fine (not prawns!!).

Hope little 'un is ok.

MoreBeta · 22/11/2011 13:52

If it is an unopened pack and it has been continuously refrigerated then probably OK.

banana87 · 22/11/2011 13:56

If it was off it would be moldy! Don't worry!

Ohnoredundo · 22/11/2011 15:11

Thanks for the advice. Husband is shamefaced bless him and baby seems fine thankfully! Men...

It won't be long before your baby is crawling around, licking shoes and eating insects.

Very glad that the baby seems fine Grin.

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 22/11/2011 15:20

If it was open & off it would be mouldy
If it wasn't open & off it would 'puff' the foil and have excess water

I really doubt DH could have given it to him without noticing it being off, if it is.

I really wouldn't worry & I'd take DH out of the dog house.
