Ok, probably jumping the gun a bit here with paranoia, but I wanted to ask if anyone has had a baby who doesn't mouth objects?
DS2 is 6 months, sitting up well, picking objects up and playing, and showing interest when we and his older brother eat, but doesnt put anything except his hands in his mouth. He did mouth toys, a bit, a couple of months ago, but doesn't anymore. I kind of thought this was a thing that all babies did, so not having to worry about what he's putting in his mouth is a bit weird, to be honest.

We did BLW with his brother and it worked really well, but then his brother was very keen to explore things with his mouth.

At the mo we're chucking cooked veg and fruit on his tray when we eat and letting him squidge and explore, and trying him on yogurt and apple sauce etc off a spoon. He's fine with new tastes, but just hasnt seemingly made the connection between what's in front of him and putting it to his mouth.

I guess I'm worried about a developmental delay. Has anyone had a similar experience, or heard of this indeed being a warning sign for a delay in something?

Probably being silly, but would like some reassurance! Thanks!

(also not sure if this should be in Weaning or the Behaviour threads, but hey ho...)

Lots of babies don't really make the connection for some time after the magic 6 month mark. My son took til about 9 months to eat anything meaningful, most went on the floor instead and very little went in his mouth. Then all of a sudden it just clicked and now at 14 months he shovels food in like a pro.

Just keep doing what you're doing, he will eventually start copying you if you eat in front of him.

Thanks Pascha, that's reassuring to know. I'm trying not to give off stressy vibes, and also firmly tell myself that all babies are different, and just because his brother took to it really well, it doesn't mean that there's a problem with DS2....

Not easy though! Wink

You could always try a spoon.

Gumtree,

Try and eat in front of him with your fingers, see if he will copy you????

Be patient. As long as he's still taking all his milk quite happily then dont worry....
