What do I do? He's just grabbed some toast off my plate and shoved it in his mouth at lightening speed!! I took it back as it is toast( gluten) but he roared house down wanting it! What should I do? He's only 20 weeks, should I start blw with fruit and veg?

Nope just keep food out of his reach - weaning guidelines are very simple you are in charge and know what is safe for him. Babies all grab things and put them straight in their mouths, food, lego, their toes ...

It's unlikely that he's hungry, he's just copying what he's seeing. Is he allergic to gluten?

Mampig · 14/11/2011 11:25

No well not that I know of!! Just cos of the 6 month guidelines, that's all!

They say no gluten? Coeliac (I can't spell this) is usually genetic, if you or your husband are allergic then it would be wise to get your son checked. Not yet though. Smile He'll watch you and copy, that's how they learn. If you take a toy away from him he's likely to cry.

Thanks both! Thought that once they started grabbing then it was time!! Glad it's not though- I'm not ready to give up ebf just yet!!!

I weaned my son very early as I was advised to by the HV! I wish I had mumsnet then. Best of luck Smile

My DD was eating foods from around 19 weeks - entirely BLW. If your baby can hold their head up, sit upright, pick up the food and put it in their mouth themselves then just keep an eye, learn the difference between gagging and choking and let them get on with it.

They don't actually swallow much when they are learning about food, just explore and play.

I also EBF until DD decided it was time to start eating.

Hmmm, World, that's interesting! As he sits with us at mealtimes, and we always eat at the table as a family- I have 3 older children who were weaned by spoon- he has started showing a lot of interest in what we eat stares down our throats. I'll maybe see how he goes, I know some veg wouldn't hurt, just to pacify him, but would be keen to blw this time, as I think it would be easier than purees! Thanks for your viewpoint!
