Semi Skimmed Milk

I know that once my dd is one I can give her cows milk and it must be full fat. However at the moment as she is having her 20oz of formula and a healthy diet is there any reason why I cant make her porridge up with semi skimmed milk?

Its just that's what we buy, when ever I have been out and brought her full fat we end up not using it. I also find it difficult to get water into her so I was thinking that it is more watery and may do some good?

She is a big baby and doesn't need to put on weight, (obviously she needs to grow) . Grin

By removing fat though, you also remove some of the fat soluble nutrients. Or so I was told once.

TBH, I can't see what the problem would be but I have no evidence for this,

here about halfway down it says it's ok to use semi skimmed in cooking from age 1. is your dc one yet?

OK, I'll have to get some whole milk. Its just odd because I understand the bit about babies getting full fat stuff but cant think that there is anything in semi skimmed that would cause concern. thank you .

I've been using semi-skimmed milk for DD2's cereals since she started solids. She's 9 months old now. I can't see the point of buying whole milk when all I use is a splash to make up the porridge/weetabix. She is still having around 25oz of formula a day plus full-fat greek yogurt every other day or so so I can't see a problem. I will be switching to full fat milk when we stop formula at 1 though.

Natzer if she is 12 months could you swap her from formula to cow's milk, that way you could just buy full fat cow's milk for her drinks and food and it wouldn't go to waste.

There is some info here on how much milk she needs between 12 and 24 months Smile.

jilted she is only 6 1/2 months. Smile

natzer really sorry, don't where I got the 12 months from Blush. If thats the case I should think that a little semi-skimmed in food woud be fine, especially if she is having her 20oz of formula. At this age the milk she is drinking should be the most important part of her diet anyway.

Why don't you make her porridge with formula milk if you already have it in the house? or do you make the whole family's porridge together?
