I think Marigol do an unsalted veg one. However, I used to make up a huge batch of the Annabel Karmel veggie one and used to freeze in portions - never got around to boiling a chicken carcass (life is too short in my opinion)

I get Kallo Organic low salt veg stock cubes for general use (it is v low salt, about 0.03% IIRC)

gingernut · 28/12/2005 22:32

I use the Kallo low salt one too (often not stocked in supermarkets - I get it in our local health food shop).

Joso · 28/12/2005 22:38

Are the Kallo ones ok for a six month old?

I just checked the packet, Joso, they are actually 0.03g of sodium per 100ml of dilute stock. The sodium level isn't the same as the salt level, I can't remember if it's higher or lower, but 3/100g is a pretty negligible amount.

(I'll have a google for relative salt levels though!)

Oh, how funny, what came up on google was an antique (Aug 2001) Mumsnet thread! Anyway it mentions the Kallo cubes and seems to say they are OK for babies. (0.03% sodium is 0.075% salt I have discovered - still pretty low.)

thanks Janh...tres helpful!

oops, sorry, meant to link - it's here!

Use water? baby will really not notice honestly.

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 28/12/2005 23:32

or you could make your own - it isn't difficult, honest. you don't even need a chicken carcass if you are making veg stock! celery is key and then what ever other veg you have in the fridge - carrots, mushrooms, few herbs etc. then freeze it in stock-sized portions depending on how much baby food you use at once.
Otherwise the marigold no=salt stock powder is in my local sainsburys

gingernut · 29/12/2005 00:32

Kallo is fine for a 6 month old (at least, mine has survived!). As bobby says you can use water and I do when I'm cooking a meal just for ds2 but if I'm cooking for the whole family I use low salt stock to make the meal a bit tastier.

Joso · 29/12/2005 20:04

cheers my friends....may try making my own in a domestic goddess styleee!
