my 7 month old hates solids - really need help!

my 7 month old honestly seems to hate food: she has been on solids for about 10 weeks and will happily eat finger foods ( although most of it ends up on the floor!) but spoon feeding her is a real battle. We have experimented with different foods, the temperature of the food,, different spoons, different sitting positions, having it before milk, after milk, with milk....you name it. Sometimes she will eat some happily, but other times cries and writhes around as if being tortured. She isn't especially teething either. We are really depressed about this. she has 4 bottles of formula and I suspect she still wants that more than anything else.
Any advice would be gratefully received!! I don't want her to end up on Tanya's house of tiny tearaways!!!

I would leave it a bit longer - seems to be my standard advice on here tonight...

She doesn't need much excpet milk at the moment, look at anything she does eat as a bonus.

My DD never ate anything except breastmilk until 10 months. She's now a healthy happy 4 year old with a very varied and balanced diet.

I wouldn't worry. Just leave it a while and try again

the four bottles must be filling her up. My DS only had about one spoonful of solids a day until he was 9 months. By that time he was on bottles too and it was only when i cut him back to 3 a day that is appetite for solids arrived. i would not worry.

how much are you expecting her to eat?

feastofsteven · 27/12/2005 18:21

she sounds absolutely fine. some babies just don't take to being spoonfed. Just keep on offering the finger foods.

daisiesinaline · 27/12/2005 18:24

agree with feastofsteven and besides - it'll save you a load of hassle with having to puree everything!!

NotQuiteCockney · 27/12/2005 19:18

Some kids don't like being fed. My DS2 was like this. He just does finger foods. And that's fine. It makes putting him onto grownup foods much easier.

If you look in old Weaning threads, there are loads of interesting finger food ideas.

geogteach · 27/12/2005 19:20

DD was 10 months before she let a spoon anywhere near her mouth, its not uncommon, keep offering her the finger foods but otherwise save yourself the stress. With any luck by the time she gets going on solids you won't need to puree anymore, much simpler in the long run!

Gillian76 · 27/12/2005 19:21

Yes, I have to say that was a big plus. No pureeing! By the time she got round to it she was just gobbling up bits of pasta like her older sister.

donnie · 27/12/2005 19:38

I suppose I am a bit paranoid about wanting her eating a fair bit. Her older sister is and was always a hearty eater so maybe my expectations are wrong. I am quite encouraged by what people say though - thanks.
I agree that the 4 bottles are probably filling her up too much . The meal she takes to the best is breakfast and there is always about 45 mins betoween her morning milk and the breakfast, plus she's had a night of no milk or food

Ds didn't have any solid food until he was 7m. As others have said, maybe just try again in a bit. They can get all they need from milk at that age, don't worry.
