BLW Banter Thread

I've started a couple of threads lately about our first ventures into BLW with Little Pickle and have had some great reassurance and support on here, often from people in the same position. I've also been lurking for ages reading others' similar threads and was wondering if folk fancied a thread where we can have an ongoing natter about how we're getting on? I felt like I was just coming back again and again with relentless questions all about our situation and I'm sure we could be of support with slightly different issues.

So where I'm at is that I've fallen into the trap of offering fruit and veg in one of those feeding net thingies - yak - but ds seems to love it and sucks away like mad until it's all gone then cries! Problem is that the two times I've offered banana straight into his hand and a tiny bit has gone in his mouth he's retched until it's come back out (the second time followed by a load of sick which I instinctively put my hand out and caught!) Where do we go from here? He's just in the habit of sucking the food through the net and therefore 'drinking' it - how do we move onto chewing and swallowing?

I tried my DD (23 weeks) with some banana today as she is showing all the signs of being ready (sitting up well unsupported/in her high chair, bringing things easily and deliberately to her mouth and no tongue thrust). I wondered if I was impatient as it is a bit early, I know, but I figured she just wouldn't eat anything if she wasn't ready.

She did struggle a bit as the banana kept breaking off so not much was sticking out of her hand for her to 'bite' off. However, she got a few bits in her mouth and kept them in for ages, moving them about in there, I kep tthinking she'd swallowed some, but then a while later she'd spit it back out. We only had one very minor gag and I am pretty sure she must have swallowed some as it looked like there was a tiny bit in this afternoon's nappy.

Does this indicate she might be ready now? If so, where do I go from here?

It could be that she hasn't lost her tongue thrust reflex? But since she sitting up well then she will be able to handle gagging food back up. So it's pretty safe to just offer food for her to play with. Especially if she's impatient to join you at the table. You can just do one meal a day as well.

Also bananas are pretty hard as first food. Have you tried roast parsnips or sweet potatoes? Or broccoli? Soft fruits like pears and plums are good too.

Forgot to say she might have lost her tongue thrust too. But is just exploring this strange mush in her mouth wondering what to do with it Grin

Thankyou.

I'm pretty sure she has lost her tongue thrust, it was more spitting the food out than pushing it out with her tongue. I think, anyway. She did look a bit shocked when she first tasted it, but seemed to like it.

It did seem hard for her to eat as it kept breaking up too much. Going to try some brocolli tomorrow when I have my lunch.

Hi everyone
what do we think about malt loaf for a 7mo? It's got stacks of iron in, but is it too sugary?
