We've been trying now for a week and so far our DS doesn't seem to be enjoying the experience. I'm trying to take it really slow but finding the whole thing really stressful as I'm keen to get him onto them asap as night times are a problem at the moment with feeds every 1 to 2 hours. How long did it take for others to get the hang of solids?

Mine has been trying for over 3 weeks, still painfully slow progress. Need to get the high chair out of the loft since much better with finger foods.

my dd2 is 7 months now and still prefers milk to solids! it is a bit of an uphill struggle but the hv says just keep at it. It is really stressful , though, when they don't take to it....don't give up though! my dd is also better with finger foods - I have come to the conclusion that it is something psychological about not liking being spoon fed as it takes away her control. Can babies be that clever?!!

Mine is also 7 months.

DS2 took about a month - started at six months, at seven months, I think some was actually going down.

Finger foods are much better, I think.

And anyway, until a year, their main source of nutrition is meant to be milk. So really not worth stressing about.

I had a fantastic health visitor-a getting on a bit hippy, she gave me a plan to get dd weaned in 6 weeks,

you do 2 weeks of one meal,2 weeks of two meals and 2 weeks of three meals and your done! I know it sounds too good to be true but i stuck to it and it worked with both dd and ds.I started them at 6 months.

This same health visitor also gave me an Avent breast pump for free!!!!!!!!

My dd only had little tastes for weeks - she was still only on two small meals a day at 7 months, having started weaning at 4 months (that was the advice back then, before anyone jumps on me ). She was a real milk monster but enjoyed her solid food as well - I was just advised to take it nice and slowly to give her time to adjust and it suited her that way. Try not to get stressed out about it; it's early days yet.

Immediate - first day he had 10 spoonfuls of baby rice, second day he had 15! Oh and he was 15 weeks old too...

However, dd was less keen and used to spit a lot out again. Still a fussy eater at nearly 5 I am afraid to report!

Gem13 · 19/12/2005 21:26

DS loved food right from the start. DD however just wasn't really interested. Couple of spoonfuls and that was it. She went on like this for about 5 months and then she just ate (sorry, second child can't remember any more details!).

Because she was my second though I tried not to get stressed about it and carried on offering her food every mealtime. DS (18 months older) ate at the same time so it was usually pretty calm.

DD went on to solids at 6 months, DS (the good eater) went on to them at 4 months. Don't know if that was one of the reasons. She's nearly 2 now and has definite likes and dislikes but is a good eater.

Sympathy about the night feeds - that sounds a killer!

Mine took to it straight away. Loved it. How old is your LO? Can't you wait a little while. I know it is cheating but have you tried letting him/her drink it from the cup? Occasionally when my LO has food frenzy, I add a little extra milk to make it more like broth and let him drink it.

excellent idea springerspaniel to make it nice and runny. This evening baby rice went down a treat! ta very much
