Baby not gaining enough weight advised to wean

I had my baby weighed on monday. He has gone from 90th% at 4 weeks to 30th% at 17 weeks. His weight started to go down after bottlefeeding for a week while on antibiotics, since then I have had thrush, bleeding nipples and mastitis. The HV said that because he hasnt been unwell I must have him reweighed before christmas and they will discuss weaning him. I wanted to wait until 6 months and I dont think he is ready yet. DS also has reflux and is quite a wriggley baby I thought these things may contribute to him not gaining weight? Would weaning even help with weight gain? Has anyone else had this problem?Any suggestions appreciated

My DD2 dropped and they got their knickers severely twisted. Despite the fact that one look at me suggests that my child is not going to be Enormous Giant of the TwentyFirst Century.

i would agrewe with everyone and try and "better" ur milk supply with some rest if poss. Go back to ur HV in new year to keep her happy and away from ur door, by whch time u will be that bit nearer to when u wanted to wean anyway

Pookey, go with the advice on here. I've had the same predicament. DS born on the 90percentile, dropped over 5.5months to the lowest one. I changed hv as one was telling me to move onto 4hrly feeds - which i just knew wasn't right for him. I upped my bfeeding (exclusive) to as much as possible - to pack him full of calories. He's been the same weight for about 6wks, but he's very lanky - so he's growing, just long way's! Least he hasn't lost any - which i'm sure he would have done if i'd have followed her advise.

Find a hv who you agree with. He's your boy. Just because they are hv's, it doesn't make them right all the time. You know your baby more than anyone. The only time i have worried about my ds is when i've seen a poor hv! Luckily, i've found a nice hv who is really supportive (they're not all bad!).

It's so hard not to fold under the pressure of 'good advice'. There is this total obsession with weaning early. And it's so hard to go against. Be strong - do what you feel is right, so you have no regrets later on. If he looks bright and happy - you know you're doing ok.

Thanks spikemomma and everyone x I have been feeding Ds whenever he seems a bit hungry today. He has mainly snacked but hopefully it will help to increase my milk supply if nothing else.
