Have started weaningv v v gently for the last three weeks - now on a couple of cubes twice a day of various combos of baby rice, pears, bananna, apple, sweet pot, buttnernut squash, carrot, etc plus jars of things liked rice pudding. Anything Ak suggests really as have her books. Ds Seems to have occasional tummy probs and occasionally unhappy so I stop everything. He's now 26 weeks officially, and don't know what to do next? I'm a bit frightened of what to do next, and how purreed it should be. At the same Time I love th3e idea of baby-led weaning and of lal things I want him to enjoy food and then eat whatever as long as it's relatively healthy. Tried bread today and he LOVED it, but want to introdue mneat and the like and worry that he has tummy upset or is reacting badly ... Am I making any sense at all?

wahjt next! Can they just havew everythign we eat

Apart from the typos of course.

DS is being veggie for the moment, so I'm not sure what the position is on meat - can't remember if they are meant to be 6 or 9 months. I think it's probably 6 months, but double check thta in AK. As he's now 26 weeks, breads/pastas/etc are fine. The only things I can think of that under 1s shouldn't have are honey (small botulism risk) and eggs (well that's what my HV told me!).

I would say though that even though you are weaning at 26 weeks, still take it really, really slowly. I got completely overexcited by weaning dd at six months, started giving her cauliflower cheese etc (which she seemed to really enjoy) but she had awful tummyache and wind and her sleeping fell apart! Keep it simple and minimal for a good few weeks, I'd say. You can introduce meat from six months, but I personally wouldn't if I was doing it again. I'd wait until the baby had been eating for a few weeks and then introduce minimal quantities, but all babies are different and some have iron constitutions!

I think I stuck to veg until about 9 months ish, then started with a tiny bit of chicken. But I went by what AK and Gina Ford said (I know, mentioning GF is a bit like mentioning Jehovah in Life of Brian)

PantomimEDAMe · 11/12/2005 22:08

We left meat alone until 9 months - can't remember if that was AK or HV recommendation.

Might be worth sticking to one or two things and then gradually reintroducing a wider range, so you know what is upsetting ds's tummy? Cutting right back so it's baby rice and pear for a couple of days, then bringing in something else for a couple of days, and if that's OK, going for a fourth and so on. Just a thought.

My DD is 27 weeks and basically eats what we eat. For example today she ate:
Breakfast : Baby Breakfast Cereal Yoghurt with fresh fruit mixed in

Lunch: Homemeade Chicken Soup followed by Mango Puree with Petit Filous

Dinner: Cheated with part of a jar of Mums Own Cod & Potatoes with carrot, cauliflower and Broccoli I had cooked prev and froze.

She loves her food and cant get seem to get enough. I took advice from my HV as she was being weaned from 23 weeks as she was really hungry.

Sometimes her sleep is disturbed but that is down to teething. 1 tooth through and another on its way.

Thanks all. Sorry for all my shocking typos, makes me look like a total thicko! v grateful for info and advice though! Part of my problem is that he was always a v v sicky baby just with BM so I have trouble gauaging how he is, but I also haven't been v good at feeding him at specific times every day ad if he seems bad I just abandon all non boobie feeding too.

Many thanks again.

I think it's fine to ease off on food. She's still a very young baby who needs milk much more than anything else.

Cratchit · 11/12/2005 22:18

Funnygirl - Sorry crossed post... V intereseted in your info, thanks so much for replying. Please can I ask, since it looks v impressive,do you worry about salt. do you give bread, and what cereal are you using?

I dont use salt on anything at all even for us and I dont give bread or any cereals apart from baby cereals. I have used Heinz and C&G cereals.

I have been told that she can have Ready Brek, Weetabix and some other adult cereals now but will hold off for a few weeks as these have some salt in them. I have also been told that she can have bread too but ditto.

All fruit and veg I give, apart from Bananas are stewed or steamed (veg)and sometimes I cook and freeze in bulk for her. I also give my DD stuff I dont like eg peas and she loves them.

The main thing is to take it slowly and find out what she likes and dislikes.

I feed her till she spits it out or closes her mouth but most of the time she sits in her highchair like a sparrow with her mouth open waiting to be fed!

Good Luck and enjoy it.

I found the same as thecattleareALOHing. My ds ate loads and then got tummy ache and frequent waking. Cut right back, mushed his food more, kept it very plain and he's much more comfy. We now do baby-and-mummy-led-weaning and he's back on 12 hours sleep a night.

sazhig · 12/12/2005 02:05

I was very worried about overloading my ds with new solids so we took them very slowly. We started just before he was 7 months, straight away using finger foods and introduced one new food a week to make sure he didn't have any reactions and to get him used to different things. I take the view that he's got the rest of his life to taste everything so why rush in & give him loads of stuff before he's even one! I'm 31 and still haven't eaten everything so why expect him to!

I found this link really useful as it gave me an idea of what to introduce & when (always took it with me when I did the shopping to give me some ideas). There are a few allergies like hayfever in our families, and thought it best to err on the side of caution. DS is now 17 months and eats fabulously - we are still using the link above and try to introduce one new food a week still, but he eats so much now (all with his own hands and sometimes using a spoon or fork) that sometimes we just can't fit one in.
