Pooless since Thursday

DD (6m) has generally had a poo every other day since going on formula at bedtime a couple of months ago. For two weeks, she's had a little bit of babyrice or banana every day and I mean a tiny taste! Yesterday she had a few spoons of sweet potato but this is the most solids she's ever had. As the title says, she's not pooed since Thursday and this is quite unusual. She doesn't seem upset or anything. I don't have any pear in the house and can't get any until tomorrow so should I offer water or something else or just not worry? TIA!

Bumping for you in case ericblack is around. I know she has been through this very recently.

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 11/12/2005 15:22

thanks!

Thinking about it, ericblack also mentioned that she'd given sweetpotato. I wonder if that is what's to blame? Her baby's fine now btw, but it took quite a while (about a week) and was an uncomfortable poo when it came.

uh-oh!

I don't know though. I could be wrong. I give my ten month old sweet pot' and he loves it.
I seem to remember ericblack (she's my sister btw) went to the doc in the end and he gave the baby something to help get the poo moving. It seemed to do the trick.

I remember when this happened to my dd1. I couldn't relax until she had done a poo. So I know how you feel. I hope it comes soon. At least you know it's not uncommon.

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 11/12/2005 17:04

Thanks. How long do you think I should wait before worrying enough to go to docs? Maybe try pear first then see what happens?!

Poor lass has a cold too

plenty of liquids and tummy massage .. rub your hand in an anti-clockwise motion around the belly .. firmly but not too hard .. it will help with digestion and babies seem to love it

HTH

Well my sister's baby took over a week. He seemed happy enough in himself all the while but when the poo came it was uncofortable for him. I would give it a week. Make sure she gets plenty of water of fluids.

I'm holding out for eridblack here because she's the current mumsnet 6-month-old-hasn't-done-a-poo-in-ages expert.

Mincepiedermama · 11/12/2005 17:08

Good idea about the massage twig.

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 11/12/2005 17:09

Thanks guys. Will do massage before bedtime, I think! Fingers crossed for appearance of eridblack or poo! LOL!

Do you think it is because I gave pure puree (iyswim)? Is it necessary to mix milk when she seems to be ok with the texture, or is the mixing of the milk necessary for digestion? I tend to feed half an hour or so after a breastfeed.

Feeling paranoid and maybe a little bit stupid now

Since she is mainly breastfed, I would not worry too much about poos at this stage. Breastfed babies of this age can easily go 10 days without a poo. Does not sound as though you are overdoing solids. As she is not upset in any way it sounds as though she isn't constipated as yet. You could offer more breastfeeds during the day to up the fluid intake if you like. I really do not think you need to worry at the moment though. HTH.

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 11/12/2005 18:33

Yes, it does help, thanks

I was worried as when fully bf she sometimes pooed several times a day and when we started with one bottle of formula it became less frequent and changed consistency but still generally every other day. She's still on just one bottle but having introduced solids and she's gone 3 days, I started to think I might have gone about the weaning wrongly! I suppose it's only one day over and I should chill out a bit.

I'll be offering plenty of fluids anyway as she has a cold (she's a bit whingey but I think it is that, rather than tummy troubles).

Thanks!

Well hooray I've never been so happy to see poo! She's finally done it. She had a bit of a wimper but nothing too bad and we are both much relieved! Thanks for the words of advice. Phew.

Oh good Racers. What a relief for you both.

Ironmaiden · 13/12/2005 20:19

Just getting over a pretty nasty constipation episode and thought I'd just recommend weetabix for breakfast which is what was recommended to me and it works a treat. Prevention rather than cure!

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 13/12/2005 20:22

Thanks
