First Day Weaning - Very sore tummy

Started weaning dd (25 weeks) yesterday. She wolfed down a full cube of Carrot Puree at about 1pm. She seemed fine all afternoon, but at about 5pm started to seem really uncomfortable, almost colic like, with back arching and crying. She normally goes to sleep pretty easily after maybe 15 mins of grumbling, but we had lots of loud crying and eventually I fed her to sleep over an hour later than normal

Is this a normal reaction to introducing solids. Should I try baby rice for a few days instead? Would feeding her earlier ie: 11am help? She seems ready for solids and was practically forcing the spoon in her mouth!

mandymac · 11/12/2005 09:59

I would probably leave it for a coupld of weeks.

tribpot · 11/12/2005 14:57

Have you given her any water?

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 11/12/2005 15:02

Is it necessary to give water anyway, or just if problems arise? Mandymac is bf her DD. I am at same stage, also bf, so have vested interest in asking

I have offered water in past but haven't really done so while weaning, but was thinking today I perhaps should!?!

baubleloo · 11/12/2005 15:11

Maybe if she wont take any water Mandy, you could try mixing the carrot with some milk.I sometimes find that the veg seems quite thick,so I always add a bit of formula to it.

tribpot · 11/12/2005 15:37

Good point, Racers. I give ds water if he seems constipated but he is bottle-fed. I had a look in What To Expect and it implies that as long as the amount of milk isn't decreasing (bit hard to tell on a bf baby) it's not a problem.

hercules · 11/12/2005 15:49

I just offered water at mealtimes and gradually over time dd took it.

2manyglassesofmulledwine · 11/12/2005 16:42

Started solids in ds on Tuesday, carrot/parsnip puree. Went down v well (also shoving the spoon into his own mouth!) but he also seemed quite grizzly after and like you I wondered if he was a bit windy from the veg.

The good news, Mandymac, is from the next day on it's never come back and he's had the puree again since with no probs. Hope it's the same for you. He's also been fine on fruit purees, which I mixed with baby rice in case he needed something a bit more bland on his stomach. Good luck with the carrot puree poo though....

hercules · 11/12/2005 16:45

Dont forget that bm isnt bland!

2manyglassesofmulledwine · 11/12/2005 16:51

Ooh, true Hercules. Remember wondering what on earth was up with ds when he went totally hyper one day when he was a couple of months old. Had had pheasant in horseradish sauce (sounds fancy, huh?) day before, and apparently horseradish is a stimulant!! He didn't sleep all day. Oh, and they were interesting poos too (or is that too much information....)

hercules · 11/12/2005 16:51

Didnt know that about horseradish!

mandymac · 11/12/2005 17:27

Hi - The carrot was mixed with breastmilk (infact the label on the freezer bag says 'carrot & boob' ), so the texture was reasonably sloppy. I am still breastfeeding, so at the moment, I'm giving her the food and then giving a breastfeed after and I will continue to do so until the quantity of food has increased. I am giving her a trainer cup (with a teat) to play with with water in the afternoons to hopefully get her used to the idea.

The carrot poo landed this morning - thanks 2many!

My plan for the next week is:
Mon - Baby Rice 11am
Tues - Baby Rice 5pm
Weds- Baby Rice mixed with Pear Puree 5pm
Thurs - Baby Rice mixed with Pear Puree 5pm
Friday - Carrot Puree 11am - Baby Rice with Pear 5pm

How does that look? I am making the baby rice pretty sloppy and then feeding afterwards, so I hope we will avoid constipation.

Sorry all the poo references, but they do seem to go hand in hand with weaning don't they

Hi Mandymac - how's the wee one now? Starting solids is a real change for babies - I would persevere because it will get better as she adjusts. It could actually have been coincidence she was upset. Did she have a breast feed after her solids? You might find that she wants to feed more initially as solids are introduced. They tend to get more thirsty.

Cut and pasted the above from your other thread. I still don't think you need to bother with rice but if you feel more comfortable with that then by all means do.

I started solids at teatime but I don't think your timing of lunchtime was wrong. I still think it could be coincidental - I would see what happens next day and keep solids to same time of day for a few consecutive days.

mandymac · 11/12/2005 19:20

Racers - thanks for the re-direct from the other thread .

Mears thanks for asking - DD is great! A really contented girl (hence my panic at last nights upset), smiley, nosey and until yesterday exclusively breastfed and following the 91st centile (proud mum moment ) - Thanks for your advice in the early days and now!

We had a better time before bed tonight. She was a little bit unsettled at bedtime, but not as bad as Saturday. I guess that having anything other than milk going through her digestive system must be a strange sensation for her. She really seems to love food though, she was nicking the spoon off DH today and practically had her face in the bowl .

Thanks everyone else for your posts too - and nice to see the Junies . I'm sure this weaning thing is going to make the coming weeks and months even more interesting! - Looking forward to the pureed parsnip on Christmas day! No sprouts though!
