...when did your baby start to really "eat"? I know all babies are different etc but have been offering food for nearly 3 weeks now and nothing is really getting eaten. Don't remember having this problem at all with my first (weaned at 4 months) but am geetting paranoid by all the "my baby is on 3 meals a day" posts.

ds is 6.5 months and I've just started him on finger food (carrot to be precise). I know from friends who also did baby-led weaning that it's a very grafual thing, it takes time. Milk should be their main food for the first year anyway. I don't think baby on 3 meals/day at 6 or 7 months is something to be aimed for tbh.

I think by about 8 mths DS understood and started to enjoy it. But he was a bit suspicious to start with.
When DD was weaned at 4 mths 4 years ago, she seemed to have fewer opinions on tastes; she didn't go on strike as much he did, initially. But she choked constantly -- I realise I found earlier weaning far more stressful because of this.

He was about 8mo, possibly 9mo. It's just tasters at this age.

DD would try and bite my banana or whatever I was eating. She never really did the shovel spoonfuls of food into her mouth either. It was really just little spoonfuls until she began to feed herself at 8-9 months.

my ds was a very large breastfed babym until 6 mths he was keen on fruit, mashed veges at first, then stopped and went back to 7 feeds a day of me
he did this until 11 mths, eating the odd mouthful of whatever I was eating, but nothing substantial or planned
He started eating again at the xmas (he was a Feb baby)
He thrived and did well, early with all his milestones so did not hurt him at all.
It baffled me and the health visitor at the time.

I started one week before 6 months (about 3 weeks ago) on baby cereal for a couple of days then went to veg & fruit - I knew it was ok to really 'go for it' as she was gobbling down everything I gave her.
She is now on a weetabix! for breakfast and for lunch and dinner a mixture of meats, veggies and fruits (about 7-8 icecubes for each meal)I use homemade but have tried a few jars for out and about days (plus 4 bottles of 7oz).
Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies. The 8 month mark seems to be fairly universal then for when they start to eat more. I do think it's the spoon that's the problem, she will chew/suck on tortilla, for example.

When can I give hummous, btw?

ds was about 2 weeks short of 6 months when I started weaing him. He did not take to it all and it was a good 2/3 months before he was on 3 meals a day. Actually it was really 4-5 mini meals a day.

Epiffany · 08/12/2005 16:13

beware the seamae seeds in hummous apparently....
never affected my kids but some on here have had quite bad reactions.

WellieMum · 08/12/2005 17:07

Another 8-monther here: until then she was enjoying her food but when she was really hungry it was milk she wanted.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/12/2005 17:35

I made it to six months (less a few days) with DS2. It took him about a month before he willingly took anything, and really, he was 8 or 9 months before he ate an appreciable amount.

He hated purees, other than meat and spicy ones, so I just skipped all that. We gave hummous from quite early, ditto prawns, nuts, whatever.
