Breakfast cereals

I have been wary of giving DS (9 months) 'adult' cereals because of them being fortified with vitamins and I had a vague notion the amounts would be too high for him. Recently though he has tried ready brek even though it does have added vitamins. Does anyone know if this is okay?

fine. very good in terms of being low in sugar. I thought this thread would be about coco pops :)

KenDoddsDadsDog · 28/08/2011 12:30

Absolutely fine!

Ha! Not a chance, see my other thread! I scour the labels to make sure no salt or sugar but was worried about somehow overdosing him on vitamins. Not sure where I got this from though?

sorry to but in but what other cerals do you use?
i'm really stuggling to find a ceral without added sugar and salt. Health visitor suggested Cheerios!

at the moment just making porrage from whole oats which is fine but would like to get a cold one to mix things up a bit.

weetabix has very little added sugar (and is less sugary than the milk you mix it with). Shredded wheat has no added sugar but even babies may balk at it unless you mixed it with hot milk. And it's probably too much fibre for them.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 28/08/2011 19:27

weetabix has a fair amount of added salt though, for a baby.
cow and gate do a sugar and salt free weetabix copy called Sunny Start or some such nonsense.

We have bite size Shredded Wheat or I have the baby weetabix and some other baby cereal but wanted to avoid buying it again as it's such a rip off. I normally mash some fruit in to sweeten it.

weetabix is fairly low salt as an adult portion of 2 biscuits has a quarter of a gram of salt so 1 biscuit would be one eigth of a gram and half a biscuit would only be one sixteenth of a gram of salt. I used weetabix and ready brek to begin with and ended up on rice krispies multi-grain shapes, cheerios, rice krispies, etc

mousymouse · 28/08/2011 20:28

weetabix and oatibix are fine. not too much added salt and other stuff.

matana · 28/08/2011 22:06

I give mine Weetabix, Shreddies and porridge. Sometimes add some fruit to sweeten but he'll eat it either way. He's eaten these since 6 months (now 9) with no apparent ill effects...

HappyAsASandboy · 28/08/2011 22:38

I give my 10 mo twins porridge made from whole oats and the cow and gate version of weetabix (half as much salt in c&g version than real weetabix!). I add fruit to them (apple/pear/banana/peach/raspberries) more often than not.

I also give them toast sometimes, usually with slices of fruit, and have done eggy bread on a few occasions. But c&g weetabix and porridge are definitely the staples.

AngelDog · 28/08/2011 23:00

We just use shredded wheat (non-Nestle, of course!) and porridge as I like to have as little salt as possible in most things so I don't have to worry about salt in things like bread & cheese.
