Quick question about Papaya!

bubbaloo · 17/11/2005 20:13

Ds loves his fruit and veg and so far I've frozen everything in ice cube trays(except banana and avocado)which I've found really handy.
I've bought him some Papaya today though, but don't know whether it can be frozen.
Does anyone know,please?

TIA.

don't see why not! think i have frozen it before

bubbaloo · 17/11/2005 20:19

Brilliant-thanks Starlover.
I've got an Annabel Karmel book but it's mentions not freezing banana, but doesn't say about papaya,so I guess you must be right.

realy? i have frozen banana before. it discolours a bit though.

bubbaloo · 17/11/2005 20:26

Yeah-I didn't think banana or avocado could be frozen.Maybe they just say that as it goes brown-I'm sure it wouldn't do any harm though!
Have also bought some plums, peaches and a melon,so looks like I'm going to have fun tonight mushing it all up.

Why on earth would you freeze a banana? You just peel it and mash it with a fork. No preparation at all!

marthamoo · 17/11/2005 20:48

I read this as "Quick question about Paypal!" and couldn't understand why the posts were about fruit.

bubbaloo · 17/11/2005 20:58

lol-Marthamoo.

In another baby weaning book I have, it says papaya is not suitable for freezing. In the Annabel Karmel book I have some of the recipes say "suitable for freezing" but none of the papaya recipes say this!

PrettyCandles · 21/11/2005 10:54

Why freeze it? Slice off a bit, put clingfilm on the rest and put it in the fridge. I don't even bother with clingiflm if its a large papay, just cut it from a narrow end and stand it on the cut end on a plate in the fridge. A good (not over-ripe papaya) will keep like this for several days, even a week, while you cut at it. It doesn't even need mushing because you just scrape it with a teaspoon, then straight into the baby's mouth.

What a good idea-thanks.

I did freeze a load the other day, along with melon, peaches and plums and it all seems fine.Ds really liked it too.

The answer to why would you freeze a banana...

You cut it in long thin slices and freeze it, and then when your baby is teething you give them frozen slices to gnaw on.

Sorry, not terribly relevant.

Mmm, papaya. Yum, yum, yum. The reason you need to puree and freeze it is, if you do it as PrettyCandles said, it turns into "one spoon for baby, three spoons for mummy, one spoon for baby..."

bubbaloo · 21/11/2005 20:23

Got it in one,Fruitful.I only tried it for the first time the other day and it is rather nice. It's also handy for me to freeze fruit and veg as although ds has 4 cubes at each meal,I do like to give him 2 or 3 different ones.I now have about 200 frozen cubes of various fruit and veg,so I wont have to make any up for a while.

And what's wrong with that?

fruitful · 22/11/2005 18:15

What's wrong with that is, papayas in England are too bl**dy small. I first ate papaya in Thailand where they are huge. Then I got back to the UK and found a recipe here that called for "one papaya" and I thought, don't be daft that'll make loads. Then I got to Tescos and saw how tiny they are. .

Papaya smoothies... mmmmm

PrettyCandles · 24/11/2005 15:54

Ah, you should see the papayas in Tesco during summer. I can't remember what they're called, but they're nearly 1ft long and taste so much more delicious than the 'ordinary' kind that you get at other times of the year. Mmmmyum!

peachandpear · 29/11/2005 21:34

Frozen banana for teething. What a fantastic idea.

peachandpear · 29/11/2005 21:35

Any other good ideas like that!?
