Will only eat baby porridge for breakfast, what does yours have?

1 yo ds will only eat baby porridge for breakfast, mixed with a fruit pot. I keep trying other things but to no avail. At £2.00 a box, which is only lasting 3 days, the cost is adding up. How can I get him to take other cereals? Have tried them with warm and cold milk, just doesnt seem to make any difference

Have you tried mini shredded wheat, or even cornflakes with a splash of milk so he can feed them to himself? :)

Have you tried ready brek? It's pretty much the same but cheaper!

DS likes toast with marmite, fruit with yoghurt, cereal, but at that age dry so he could pick up the bits with his fingers (he prefers it with milk now).

Have you tried something different like scrambled egg, done in the microwave?

Ready brek or normal porridge with tinned fruit here. Every day! DS now likes dried cereal too to snack on (cheerios, cornflakes and dried cranberry wheats). He doesn't like it with milk - probably because it goes soggy?

ShowOfHands · 09/06/2011 21:43

Does he not like normal porridge. It's ridiculously cheap by the sackload.

DD loved breakfast though. We had eggs, fruit, yoghurt, pancakes, drop scones, waffles, muffins, bagels, cereals, toast etc. All sorts.

I couldn't see any difference from Ready Brek so put mine on that when they were little. It was much cheaper.

DD would only eat normal porridge when we had it one morning and she had baby porridge and she wanted what we had. Now she can't get enough of it! She also point blank refused ready brek, despite numerous efforts to get her to try.

I used to also give baby museli in yoghurt, then moved onto weetabix really crumbled up into yoghurt.

DD does however also like baked beans, scrambled egg, eggy bread dipped (especially if dipped in ketchup).

I have tried other cereals (cheerios, shredded wheat (big and small) etc..) both with and without milk but had no joy. She will eat weetabix broken into quarters with a pot of yoghurt to dip it into though.

Thanks for all those ideas, we have tried ready brek (as def loads cheaper) lots of time, but does refuse point blank. Will try other cereals dry I think. He'll eat our toast, but doesn't really like to have it off his own plate!!! Thank you

I think the key is to keep trying other things. And if there's a food you know he likes at other times, try giving him that at breakfast instead. For a couple of months ds' breakfast was just fruit pieces as I knew he loved his fruit- that's how we made our first breakfast breakthrough!

HarrietJones · 13/06/2011 09:21

Dd3 isn't into breakfast. So far she likes croissants & pancakes. That's it.

MollysChamber · 13/06/2011 09:27

Try giving him something completely different for a month or so - toast, fruit, yoghurt - then re-introducing cereal / ready brek.

Jojay · 13/06/2011 09:31

I agree with Molly - drop the baby porridge, but give him foods you know he likes at other times of day, fruit, cheese etc. Then reintroduce cereals later.

My Ds2 is a very unfussy eater but has never had much appetite in the mornings, and normally only manages a few mouthfuls of cereal, but he makes up for it atother times of the day and it's just the way he is.
