Just started weaning but dd has diarrhea - should I stop?

Hello, not sure what to do about this so would appreciate some advice from all you more experienced mums... Just started to introduce solids to my dd who'll be 6 months on Saturday (can't for the life of me remember how many weeks she is now). We started off with baby rice mixed with ebm, and then carrots a couple of days later. Since then she's had diarrhea in the morning on waking (a couple of poopy nappies), although the feed that I've been given solids is at 11am. She had carrots for 2 days, then I thought I'd try her on some butternut squash yesterday, and again had a very loose motion and lots of screaming this morning.

I guess it could not be related to the food at all, and be teething, but it seems like too much of a coincidence. What do I do? Do I hold off on the solids for a while longer, or try something else - I know bananas are less likely to give the runs. When should I reintroduce the food that's been causing an upset tummy?

Thanks very much!

How bad is the diarrhea? Does it look like food? What sort of quantity of solids has she had?

It's pretty unlikely that baby rice or carrots would cause a reaction, but it might be worth giving her a few days off.

(Well done on making it to 6 monthsish, by the way.)

Personally I think I'd hold off solids altogether or revert to rice and ebm for a day or so. You can continue to breastfeed with a tummy bug and those things you have introduced are actually the sort of foods recomemended post tummy bugs so you could try again in a few days time and see if it recurs. It could still be teething but as you've only just started wenaing going back to basics won't do any harm.

Hi there, thanks for your responses. NotQuiteCockney - sorry about the graphic detail, but no, it doesn't look like food, it's just very thin and looks more mucous like. Usually her poos are quite thick and have a paste like consistency (even though she's breastfed).

Hm, does she have a cold?

It does sound quite runny and horrid. I'm not sure the food is the problem, but as LIZS says, best to go back to the boob for a bit until it clears.

She's a bit sneezy, but I don't think it's a cold. Only other thought is that it could be teething - she is gurning. chewing, drooling even more than usual (although she has been doing all three for months).

I am not one to offer advice on weaning as I am struggling myself, but my dd recently had terrible loose nappies and was also vomiting and crying in the mornings, it turned out to be her first tooth. Didn't know it could effect them so badly!
