Do newly weaned babies go on and off food?

I've started weaning my 5mo - she was really into it for the first couple of weeks loving baby rice and being ok with apple and banana and really liking butternut squash. Not tried anything else yet. But she's gone off it this week. She's not ill 0 and is having more milk than usual, but gone off the food and will take about three teeny spoons or licks off my finger then stop whereas last week she was having much more before not wanting any.
Is this normal? Should I stop for a bit?

Yup it is normal. If she is happy to sit with you at mealtimes keep offering her small amounts when you are eating. But don't worry about it.

My DD went backwards and forwards a lot with food between 6 and 12m. It is only in the last few weeks that she has started to eat consistent amounts at every meal.

Yes, and it's because they don't see food as food - at first, it's just stuff to play with that tastes nice. For months our LO (now 8.5 months) seemed to view milk as something to fill her up, but not solid food, even though she clearly enjoyed all the tastes. She was just starting to eat really well and be hungry for food, but got ill two weeks ago and didn't eat any solids at all for two days, just breastfed almost continuously. Now she seems to be back on track and enjoying her food again, but the amount of solids she eats each day does vary a bit.

Agree with all the above. My DD was really enjoying her food for the first couple of weeks too, & then she started to full sit indep & roll and went totally off her food - she was far to busy learning new skills to be bothered!
We're now back on track, but intake varies a lot from day to day, partially teething related I think, but also not helped by her big brother (3yrs) who has taught her to blow raspberries & thinks it's incredibly funny when his little sister does it with a mouthful of food! Grrrrrr....!

My 7mo DS has turned his nose up at everything for the past two days, having been an unstoppable eating machine before this. I put it down to maybe teething, a slightly snotty nose and who knows what.

This too shall pass........

Really glad I found this post I was actually searching for something healthy to give my daughter as a snack as she seems to eat finger food but when I try and feed her from a spoon she won't take it. But like everything else I search 'IT'S NORMAL'!!!!!
Thank God!!

I too am pleased to see this thread having had DD "weaned" by my mum, she is now not eating as much and I was beginning to think I was rubbish!

cgpmummy - ditto! DS likes finger food and only fromage frais from a spoon. He's 6.5mo and loves to play with rice cakes mostly!

Very glad I found this have just googled for info as my lb (4.5months) has been loving pureed pear/banana / sweet potato and baby rice/porridge for the last couple of weeks until yesterday when he has decided he doesn't like the taste of anything & screws his face up, holds his lips tight together & moves his head away from the spoon. May be teething related but very glad it's normal just need to preserver xx
