vitamin drops - do you?

DD is just coming up to 6 months and has been eating a couple of small meals a day for a bit now, plus still taking lits and lots of milk feeds. I've just spotted "the advice" is to give her vitamin drops too - it seems a bit unneccessary to me as she's out and about a lot, gets plenty of veg and I take a BF vitamin supplement with A,C and D in it.
And then I looked at Tesco online and there's only one brand - if Tesco don't have an own brand version it can't be a big market...?!

So just wondered - do you/did you give vitamin drops?

Thankyou!

I do, there is abidec which is usually on the shelves, dalivit which is harder to get and we currently use Wellkid which I get in Tesco but I have also seen on the shelf in Boots which is a malty vit mix which I stir into their porridge every morning or just give them a teaspoon full into their mouths if they want it. They love it and it is suitable up to 5 years old! Surprised there is only one brand online - our Tesco has lots on the shelves?

No, never have done. My HV didn't mention it to me but my DSis (also a HV) did. Then she confessed she'd not followed the advice with her own DD either!

Woodlands · 11/05/2011 22:43

I don't. I did once ask the HV about it and she said fairly unenthusiastically that I should give them, but I'm not convinced. DS eats a wide range of healthy foods and still has plenty of BFs, so I think he's OK. If he ate a very limited diet I would consider it.

HappyAsASandboy · 12/05/2011 09:45

I do (Abidec). I hope its like an adult taking vitamins ... if they need it then great, if not, it won't do any harm.

My HV recommended them from 6 months.

thankyou for replies. I'll have a rummage in RL tescos and see what's what.

I do as it said to in the O-5 book and I'm a sucker for following instructions. I asked the health visitor and she was a bit 'meh - if you want to' about it but I thought it was wise. We have Abidec as I couldn't get a non-branded cheaper one.

vmcd28 · 16/05/2011 14:28

My HV said ds2 should take them frm 6 months. He's a few days away from that and I'll b using them. They don't tell you stuff if research hasn't suggested it would be worthwhile. I'm not saying they're crucial or anything, just that they're possibly a good idea.

mousymouse · 16/05/2011 14:31

not atm, I give the dc vit d from october to april, though. (tablets that dissolve in water from the chemist in germany)

naturalbaby · 16/05/2011 20:17

I started dc's a few weeks ago and ds1 is 3. up till a year they were still getting bmilk and formula so got all the vitamins they needed that way. i didn't see the point in spending money on vitamins that were already supplemented in their food/milk.

vmcd28 · 17/05/2011 10:02

But my hv said they don't get everything they need from milk after 6 months

Tanyaaah · 18/05/2011 20:31

I don't understand why we need to! How did the human race get this far if vitamin drops were necessary?!

vmcd28 · 18/05/2011 20:41

But before things like this, child mortality rates were much higher snd life expectancy was shorter.
But probably more significant is the fact that veggies etc aren't as nutritious as they were

theborrower · 18/05/2011 21:25

I don't...but am considering giving DD them when she turns 1, as a safeguard because we'll stop using formula around then (hoping to, anyway!). It's for peace of mind more than anything else, I guess, even though DD eats a good varied diet.

misschenko · 18/05/2011 21:41

HVs are supposed to tell people where they can buy Healthy Start vitamins They're free to those on benefits but can also be bought for £1.77 a bottle. You could phone HV and ask and if she doesn't know tell her to find out. They're usually available at health clinics and sometimes at sure start centres.

galois · 18/05/2011 21:44

I give mine sunlight in the summer, without factor 50 slathered all over them (I do take care they don't get too much sun, though) and in the winter give vitamins once they're 6m+

TheresAHuppoInMyHouse · 19/05/2011 10:36

My DD was on extra vitamins, iron and folic acid from about a month old (but she was 2 months prem). We were advised to drop the folic acid when she started putting on weight (so that went long ago!) and to drop the iron when she's started having plenty of fruit and veg (so we're about it stop it) but that she should keep having vitamins until she's one year old, as well as a healthy balanced diet. She has Abidec which has the added advantage of reassuring me that she hasn't got a peanut allergy (as her sister has), as it's based on peanut oil.

I must say, as she's healthy and eats well, (and so do I) I don't really see the need, so she doesn't get them daily (as I've been told to), but every couple of days or so.

vmcd28 · 19/05/2011 11:00

Abidec is on 3 for 2 at Sains just now.
Afaik, the vitamins in this supplement can't do any harm, so why not?

And regarding sun cream, PLEASE do slather it on when the sun is out. Coming from a family of skin cancer sufferers, believe me it's not worth it. Kids get enough vitamin D through their hands if you don't put cream on them.

Tanyaaah · 19/05/2011 14:02

I suppose it can't hurt, it's just another thing to spend my (lack of) money on!

vmcd28 · 19/05/2011 16:35

I had a look at Abidec today. - one bottle lasts 83 days if under a year old, and 42 if over a year old, which isn't bad value for £3 a bottle (and 3 for 2 in sains and boots)

lurcherlover · 24/05/2011 23:28

Healthy Start vitamins are much cheaper than standard kids' ones and all clinics sell them.

vmcd28 · 25/05/2011 11:43

Lurcher, I've struggled to fins Healty Start vitamins anywhere! Clinic dont have them - told me to go to "any pharmacy". I've tried 3 smallish pharmacies, and 2 branches of Boots. No-one stocks them.
How much are they? I was under the impression that theyre not much short of £2 a bottle...? If thats correct, then the drops from Sains work out the same, as theyre £3 but on 3for2.
