Can a 13mo have paté?

Just wondering if it would be ok to give dd, 13 months, paté? She's just started eating sandwiches, & am trying to think of soft fillings she might like. If yes, is this a good food for a child her age to be eating?

TIA

Oooh spooky. I just logged on to ask the exact same question!! Except for is it ok for a 6month old. Eagerly anticipating answers!

We've given DD (13mo) a little taste of pate, she didn't seem too enthused.

As far as I know the only things that should be avoided are whole grapes and whole nuts....

ChristinedePizan · 09/05/2011 18:45

I think it would be fine but might be a bit rich. Philly and houmous are both good for babies :)

TheArmadillo · 09/05/2011 18:49

I would check the salt levels as they are likely to be very high.
Pregnant women are advised against it cos of the listeria risk - same as soft cheese. But I haven't seen any warnings against it for young children.

Ooo, spooky Kimberlina! Thanks for the replies, I think we'll give it a try then. Wouldn't give it often anyway, but dh & I enjoy paté occasionally, so thought dd could join in! I had a look at the salt content in some in M&S Armadillo, & it didn't seem too bad. I guess it's easy to spread thinly too, so therefore not use alot. Flisspaps, she seems to like garlicy flavours, so am hopeful! Was also going to try houmous, thanks Christine.

It's easy to make pate too - so you can control the salt levels which are high in most pre-pared stuff. Google 'Easy pate recipes' and there are loads. Fish pates easy to make too. My kids love smoked mackerel whipped up with cream cheese, lemon juice and black pepper.

ThePetiteMummy · 09/05/2011 19:51

Thanks Lucky, I'll do that, sounds yummy! (love the name btw!)

Thanks but I wish I could justify having your name! Too much pate!

ThePetiteMummy · 09/05/2011 20:28

Ha ha! The downside is I often get mistaken for being a teenager, which is very annoying at the age of 29! Someone commented about 'Mothers getting younger these day's as I was wheeling dd through town the other day, grrrrr!

My 6mo had homemade pate yesterday (no salt) and loved it.

ThePetiteMummy · 10/05/2011 09:18

Would you mind sharing your recipe Oko?

Sure, chicken liver fried up with onions and garlic - usually in olive oil. Then bung in a bit of brandy (the alcohol cooks off!). Whizz in food processor, and done. My dad made it once with a thick layer of melted butter on top which was nice on hot toast.

ThePetiteMummy · 10/05/2011 11:49

Thanks, I never knew it was so simple! I haven't got a food processor though, would a hand blender surfice?

I reckon a hand blender would be fine.

Ooh lula, cream! Great idea.

LuckyWeKeptTheCot · 11/05/2011 10:57

I'm pregnant and pate is off limits. I will have to leave this thread or I'll collapse with longing....

ThePetiteMummy · 11/05/2011 23:38

Congrats Lucky, the bump that relates to the name I guess! Don't worry, we'll stop with the paté talk now!

Thanks - but still, enjoy!
