Ds woke from his nap at 4.30, he was quite hot because he'd pulled his blanket over his head but I checked his temp and it was normal.

I gave him some scrambled eggs and a plum and apple puree for his dinner about an hour ago and while he was eating I noticed what I thought was a heatlump (because he'd been so hot before) just above his lip, another appeared under his eye and a few on his chest (the ones on his chest were much smaller). They all seem to be going down but now he is sounding a bit snotty so I'm worried he may have had a slight allergic reaction?

He's had egg a few times before and was fine but he's never had plums...

Wwyd, he's fine in himself but I'm worried about putting him to bed now. I have absolutely no experience of allegies. DS is 9 months by the way.

(someone please slap me for being stupid if I am!)

Could you ring NHS direct? They will probably have some good advice. If the spots/lumps are going down of their own accord then I think he is probably okay, but maybe a trip to the GP tomorrow just to make sure?

I don't think you are being stupid at all. I've just started weaning DS and am finding it a lot more of a minefield than I ever imagined!

Hope all goes okay tonight and your DS is better in the morning.

Thank you, I've just done the NHS direct symptom checker and it said to just see a pharmasist so I think I may just be being a bit of a hypochondriac!

I know what you mean about weaning being a minefield! I feel like saying to him that if he really wants to be weaned he can do it when he's left home Grin

Hi I have severe allergies and feel i can help: It sounds like a classic allergic reaction. The spots sound like hives to me, bought on by the allergen. I would not risk him having either for now if you are worried - the next reaction may be worse. I know you have said that he has had egg before, but you do not always react the first time you injest the allergen. You can always pop to the GP tomorrow, they may prescribe piriton syrup and ask you to keep an eye on his diet.

Grin

Glad NHS website says it is not serious and that you don't have to hunt down an out of hours doc or go to A&E tonight :)

Ok, it's off to the doctors tomorrow then. Can I just ask, when you say not to give the foods again as another reaction may be worse, would I then be able to get the doctor to check if he really does have an allergy to it? I wouldn't want to remove eggs from his diet if I don't need to iyswim?

On the plus side...I now have 9 eggs that need to be eaten by the end of the week and neither dh or I even like eggs! So I guess I'll be making some alot of cakes tomorrow Grin

The reaction (the bits you see) is the immune systems way of warning you about the allergy - so each time the food is introduced, the reaction or warning will be worse. So there could be a risk of breathing problems or swelling that are all symptoms of the body going into anaphylactic shock. I wouldn't give them to him until you have seen the doctor, just to be on the safe side. Also (should of said earlier, but forgot) the reaction may be slightly delayed so it is a good idea to just keep an eye on him for the next 24 hours. It would be important for you to find out if he is allergic as there are eggs in vaccines such as the MMR. Some information on food allergy for you, scroll down for eggs:- www.anaphylaxis.org.uk/information/common-food-allergens.aspx

HTH :)

My DD hs an egg allergy - symptoms similar to yours at a similar age and again not the first couple of times she had egg, but happened a couple of times after that. we took her to the GP (again, not immediately as symptoms subsided on their own) and she refered us to hospital allergy clinic for skin prick test (had to wait a couple of months, no egg in meantime). The test showed she was definitely allergic, and they said it came up as fairly severe, so guessing symptoms could have gotten worse if we kept giving it. The good news is that most babies grow out of it in a few years, so we are just hoping she is one of them. they are going to skin prick test again a year later to check.
by the way, we spent long and hard looking into the MMR issue, as different professionals told us different things, but the official advice is that it is safe, but if the reaction to egg is extreme, e.g. anaphalaxis, vaccine can be given in hospital as a precaution. Our DD had hers in the surgery as usual no problems. Info on these websites: www.bmj.com/content/320/7239/929.extract and www.allergyuk.org/fs_egg.aspx.

by the way the hosptial prescribed an antihistamine medicine to carry round in the change bag in case of accidental ingestion or allegric eaction to anything else. Haven't had to use it yeat, but perhaps you could see if you could get that from GP or pharmacy just in case.

I took him to the doctor and all he said was to not give him egg again until he is a year old. I think I would rather ds was tested for an allergy so that I could be sure but the doctor just seemed to brush off my concerns (although he may just have wanted to get rid of us because ds accidentally kicked him between the legs while he was examining him Blush). And I'm assuming that means nothing with "traces of egg" in it too?

That's a bit of a pain - much better to actually check if there is an allergy than just to say to avoid something? are you able to see a diff doc who may be able to refer you? Iirc
, they would do a skin prick test first to see if there is sensitivity to egg and if yes then a food challenge where they monitor closely for allergic reaction.

It just seems a shame that he'll miss out on eggs which a good source of protein etc when he may not have an allergy!
