Want to do BLW but DD isn't showing signs of sitting up!

She doesn't even really hold onto things for very long. How long can I wait?!

Was doing purees but think I am a BLW convert!

When she can hold her head up reliably and sit with support. No rush, how old?

lunafire · 07/05/2011 11:18

Why not just wait? We did.

ChippingIn · 07/05/2011 11:20

As above :)

greeneone12 · 07/05/2011 11:56

She can sit supported yes...she is 6 months and one week. But, she doesn't hold things for long before dropping them. She doesn't pass things from hand to hand either.

Thanks to a fellow Mumsnetter I now realise I have cut back her feeds to 4 a day without even realising! Want to change to BLW as soon as poss.

Is she showing any interest in what you are eating at all? If you want to BLW this is essential - it's about... well - the baby leading the weaning, not just getting her 'on solids'. She needs to be showing interest in what you have and taking it from you... if she isn't you need to wait a while to BLW while making sure she's around food or puree feed her if you just want her having food - but that's not BLW.

greeneone12 · 07/05/2011 12:12

Ok thanks....I have started purees already so she is getting some solids lunchtime and evening. She does look when I am eating but doesn't reach out for anything. Saying that she rarely sits with me when I eat. She took particular interest in my chocolate cakethe other day ;)

So, you aren't really talking about BLW as much as introducing finger food. As long as you stay with her and she's sitting up OK (proped up) then there's no harm in giving her 'finger food' - bananas are as good a thing as any to start with or soft berries.

greeneone12 · 07/05/2011 12:27

I do want to stop with purees completely now. We don't have a dining table but could sit her in highchair next to me at mealtimes! I will learn some patience and get going.

Get plenty of cloths, wipes, long sleeved bibs and either a BIG mat or a good (steam) mop... it's not for the faint hearted! Grin

greeneone12 · 07/05/2011 12:52

Thanks so much. Hope it won't throw her off after having purees for the last few weeks...

Nah - she may look at you a bit like this Hmm but if she's actually hungry and ready for food she'll soon sort it out!

There are some good BLW books around, or so they tell me, I've always just given them 'food' and not worried too much about it. But if you are unsure in anyway they will help you decide what to give her and how to 'serve' it (sizes, shapes, type etc).

I wouldn't worry if she's not that interested - she's still very small.

Remember the 'golden rule' 'Food is fun until you're 1' - milk is the staple.

greeneone12 · 07/05/2011 13:45

You know I do tell that to lots of people but then I have read 3 meals a day by 7 months in a variety of books etc and then get scared that I will be doing it wrong if she isnt taking that much!

If she is doing fine on milk why stress about food? BLW is all about the baby leading and being ready - not a bunch of bookwriting, rule making, numpties :)

Really, 'expose' her to food, let her mash it up, squeeze the life out of it and shove some in her mouth eat a bit... keep up with her milk and relax. She's only a biddy baby at 6 months!
